Firearm balancing & Focused shooting changes

9 posts in this topic

1. Changes to focused shooting:
  • Give all firearms the "focused shot" option.
  • Change it so focus can be activated by holding the sprint key while aiming down the sights (this would also make focused shooting a little more practical than waiting the 3 seconds per shot)
  • Change the focused shot overlay to a simple fake Depth of Field blur overlay that occurs beneath the view model if possible (shown below).
  • Make it so when the player is focused the gun doesn't sway at all and the weapon's spread is decreased substantially for the next shot taken (This would make saving players who have been grabbed and are a distance away much more rewarding, obviously when I say spread I mean how far the shot pattern will vary from the point of impact. On shotguns this would mean the pellets would spread out from the center of the iron sights in a somewhat even fashion).
  • Holding in focus for too long before taking a shot would cause you to lose focus and get a temporary 1-2 second increase in weapon sway
  • Holding the focus/sprint key in between shots would cause you to return to focused mode without having to hit & hold the sprint key again between shots

2. Change the SAKO scope so it's attached to the view model rather than using a screen overlay (reticle could also use the same method I used with the ACOG reticle I modified so it would be ultra crisp).

3. Possibly make it so the reticles for the M16A4 & SAKO appear in the middle of the ADS animation so the reticles aren't visible from the hip. (texture swap? kind of like fake parallax - it won't be completely realistic since light shouldn't be very visible through the optic from the hip).

4. Make firing from the hip much more sporadic in terms of accuracy.

5. Tighten the groupings on the shotguns, Depending on the choke used with 00 buckshot you should still be able easily to hit someone at 50 yards from a standing position (not taking into account fear/adrenaline/pressure to perform etc - but it feels like in general the groupings should be a lot tighter).

6. Decrease the amount of time required to ADS on a few of the weapons (notably the shotgun & the 686).

Right click + Open in new tab/window etc to view the full images.

I love your ideas, though some of them we've discussed at length within the team already. It's mostly just a matter of polish and finalizing, but we aren't close to that stage yet. When we have all of the core features in and start the polishing/finalizing process we'll for sure be taking in awesome feedback and ideas from you guys. Very well done, Finnigan.

Yeh, it'd be cool if the Sako had a 3D scope, I quite like them in games. The only downside would be potential framerate lag.

Thanks guys,

I'm on a bit of a concept splurge now that I have some more time on my hands to work on this sort of stuff.

Even if none of this gets implemented in 1.07 or later it will hopefully provide some ideas for people to build and brainstorm on.

#5 is a problem encountered in virtually all video games. I think that while most developers know that a shotgun is capable of holding a pretty close pattern even at moderate ranges, the 'spray' is what makes it different from rifle choices, so the spread is increased beyond what you'd see in real life. Also, an 18" barrel with no choke would be pretty dismal at 50 yards, 00 buck or no : P

well make it an option in realism mode?

as for #6 I think the ADS time is just fine.

It's not too bad, obviously worse with a cylinder choke. Better than 12", at least.
