Basically, Gabe Newell talking about the Steam-Box:

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/03/06/toot-toot-first-steamboxes-might-be-here-by-june/#more-144470

Gamepads – or whatever brave new hand-based world they’re trying out – are also presenting obstacles, apparently. “We have a couple of different controller prototypes that we’re using, and that’s one of the things that we’re giving to customers.”

Outside of button pushing is the wearable computing concepts Valve’s long been talking up, which will apparently play a part in the Steambox. “You need to actually be able to directly measure how aroused the player is – what their heart rate is, things like that – in order to offer them a new experience each time they play.” Er. I am NOT COOL with Valve knowing how aroused I’m feeling, nor am I sticking any tubes into Little Alec.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-21677119 (Interview where he says all this stuff)

If it won't let you watch the interview, just look back at this picture every once in a while whilst reading the article and let your imagination do the rest.

"We'll be giving out some prototypes to customers to gauge their reactions, I guess, in the next three to four months.

"There are noise issues and heat issues and being able to [deal with] that while still offering a powerful enough gaming experience is the challenge in building it."

He added that his company had still to finalise how the console's controller would work as it continued to explore the possibility of including sensors to measure the gamers' body states.

"If you think of a game like Left For Dead - which was trying to put you into a sort of horror movie - if you don't change the experience of what the player is actually feeling then it stops being a horror game," Mr Newell explained.

"So you need to actually be able to directly measure how aroused the player is - what their heart rate is, things like that - in order to offer them a new experience each time they play."

And if none of that interests you, here's the theme tune from Jurassic park instead:

Is the Steambox simply an onlive streaming like device, or have Valve dared venture into the world of actual console support? (despite the imminent rape threats they will receive from PC Aryans)

Also the video game arousal device, that shit's already been invented. Load up the Xbox put some tape over the right trigger put the controller between your legs and shoot some people on screen. Make sure you aim at the kids if you wanna get off really quick.

They just fired all their hardware guys?

“We have a couple of different controller prototypes that we’re using, and that’s one of the things that we’re giving to customers.”

Every single thing Gabe says is some kind of derivative of this sentence. lol

I wouldn't be surprised if the third one is a trailer for HL3.

They might figure it would be nice to release it with their new OS.

So...

Their big third reveal was a controller which resembles a startled owl?

Go. Valve. <_<

It looks retarded but I like the idea of the trackpads, they're more responsive and suitable for PC centric titles like Civilization

Wish it had a d-pad though

I doubt Civilization fans are gonna be getting wet for a controller though. Just tried tweaking my hands to fit the pad and button placements, clearly Valve are going after the often ignored Tyrannosaurus market.

Kudos to them

Maybe the controllers play music, since it sure looks like it. Those trackpads look like boombox speakers. it looks like it will be a tough convert for console players accustomed to joysticks

that's a nice controller. the no autoaim cs:go shit was a good demo of what it can do. the dude was a bit slow on lining up his shots, but i think in time as you get comfy with it and get your personal settings right, it might end up being about as close to a keyboard/mouse setup in controller from that we've had thus far.

i do find it kinda funny how long it's taken for controllers to catch up to keyboard/mouse. How many new technologies had to be developed just to mimic the same level of control off of components that've been around since like the early 70's. i guess it kinda shows just how amazing a mouse, even a ball mouse,is at being a input device. the analog control stick on your average controller is locked in one pivot point which seems like it'd be limited in so many ways. where this steam controller makes your thumb into a mouse on, pretty much, a touch sensitive mousepad dpad, allowing you to jump around like you normally would instead of slowly turning around.
