Use empty weapon as a bat

8 posts in this topic

I hate carrying around empty weapons. They fill up the inventory, and they are essentially useless without ammo, so how about letting us take that m16, and other weapons, by the barrel and swinging it like a bat? On "Walking Dead" Rick was punching zombies in the face with his revolver. The point is yes edged weapons don't run out of ammo and no, a gun without ammo isn't any bit less deadly then an equivalently sized melee weapon.

So, currently all guns, even the flashlight, already have a melee animation when you press the "shove" key, which actually does damage (can kill a zombie) but is weak. The reason it is weak is because you can still shoot your gun or swing your sword after you shove the zombie off. What i am proposing is an attack mode which can be implemented with a "melee" toggle key. When pressed their would be a transition delay and then your weapon would be held by the barrel (of course it can be a custom grip/posture depending on what works best for the weapon in use). When in this mode, the gun can deliver a powerful melee attack and is balanced by the limitation that the weapon can't be fired without first pressing the "melee" toggle key again and waiting for the gun to transition back to the ready position.

If a fire arm could also be used as a melee weapon then the player won't actually bother picking up any of the real melee weapons that the game has. Besides, it would be way too hard and time consuming to add this sort of mechanic.

It would be a shit load of work, but making them perishable would be an option i.e. when used as full on melee weapons (Not just to shove) they gradually break down meaning if you were to do this they'd either break entirely (meaning they could no longer be used to shoot/as melee weapons) or if you stopped using it as a melee weapon before it broke completely it'd then run the risk of jamming/accuracy/ROF penalites (which'd obviously get more severe the more and more they broke).

Not true. People grab melee weapons when they cant find a gun, and discard them after finding a gun, but people never drop a gun unless they find a better one. Nonetheless melee weapons will continue to get used, just as little as they are now and melee would continue to be a good way to get infected. The point of this idea is to make a empty gun something more then dead weight.

Weapons used as a bat would do less damage than a fire axe... making melee weapons more wanted when you dont have any ammo left
