Campaign gamemode Idea

7 posts in this topic

I have a idea regarding on how the maps could be played or function on servers:

This idea is focused primary on the future of nmrih when more official maps are produced. My idea is that maps instead of being produced unrelated to each other and thrown onto the servers randomly, that they should be organised into multiple different campaigns. Each containing at least 3 maps

How It Would Work?

I believe future maps could be arranged together as a campaign for example: after beating a map when you escape by helicopter, instead of replaying it, the server will automatically change level to the next map in the set campaign which will take place after the helicopter crashes or something, and likewise after the players complete this map, the next map in the campaign will load. To beat a campaign you would have to progress through all the maps of that campaign, if players fail a map a determined amount of times they will have to play through the campaign again (from the first map), thus forcing players to work as a team and be careful.

I respect it would be alot of work to create a load of maps for a campaign, however wouldn't it be much more realistic and fun if instead of simply beating maps like Chinatown over and over again you would actually get the chance of continuing your adventure in another map, its just a bit anticlimactic after surviving an epic map (particularly objective maps) to just escape and then start the map over again!

Reply to what you think of the idea of arranging maps differently.

I also think this is the way to go, i.e. a structure similar to that of L4d'.

As it stands, survival maps can get a bit boring, so having modified versions (Objectives leading into survival situation/extraction) as end levels for campaigns would be good.

Looking at this from the technical side, it would be fairly easy to implement. A simple entity that tells the server to change/set the map would be required. You can do this right away with the point_servercommand I think, but it seems to be a hacky way of doing things.

I like the idea of connected maps. But this would mean that the devs have to finish the maps for a hole campaign before releasing it and in my opinion it will take a lot of time to do it. But for the atmosphere and for alternation it would be good.

Personally I like the idea of being thrown into a random, one-time hell hole and then being rescued, not a straightforward chain of levels. That's just me though.
