Heavy Hauler / Inventory Management Mode

7 posts in this topic

When people play this game there is a tendency to grab up everything in sight, I.e. ammo for a weapon you don't have, pills, bandages etc. I personally do this to grab up what would otherwise be left behind by my team in order to share with anyone that asks for it in the future, and lastly for my own use. The random weapon and ammo spawn locations really encourage this because nothing is certain.

Now one issue I've noticed is constant down time whenever i find something useful to pick up. You are forced to drop many items just so you can incorporate something new, and usually small, into your inventory, which at this point has become buried under the items you were forced to drop to make room. And now you are having a hard time selecting what you want to pick up without first picking up what you just dropped. It's even worse if seconds matter, I.e. picking up some pills or replacement weapon in a hurry while getting chased by a runner or getting surrounded by the walkers.

So I propose the following: you can pick up some generous % more then usual at the cost of preventing you from sprinting very far. This allows you the flexibility to manage your inventory, on the run if need be, without having to drop it all on the floor just to pick most of it back up again. It also allows for acting in the support role to transport lots of stuff, but not very quickly (forced to walk most of the way and take frequent breaks when sprinting to allow stamina to recharge). Another useful ability is the temporary use of a weapon you just found but prefer not to carry with you beyond that room like a shotgun, chainsaw, sniperrifle etc.

Also note I am against the idea that travel speed be linearly associated with the weight you are carrying. I think walk speed should be the same always (helps keep survivors together). The mod "zombie panic" for example will drastically slow you down with each additional item in your possession, and i think this hurts gameplay (especially in this mod when you have to carry around empty weapons). So i propose there should be 3 speed categories: light weight, medium weight, and heavy weight which determine how much sprinting stamina you have. Also it should be indicated in the ui somehow (perhaps when viewing your inventory to display in the center of the pie menu a stick-figure representation of a athlete/sprinter, or hiker with fanny pack, or hiker with full backpack) so the player is informed of his movement capabilities.

If additional nerfing is needed for overloaded players then the turning speed of the character can be determined by your weight, i.e. slower turning when you are carrying more.

The ideas overall are well arranged.

I like the part of taking an extra weapon without having it in inventory.

Let's imagine a situation: you are cornered, having full inventory of firearms, but you have none melee. You are barehanded at the moment when you suddenly spot a fire axe. You try to take it, but everything that happens is that fire axe starts hovering in the air.

Maybe being barehanded at the moment of taking an extra weapon would the main condition to success.

Taking an extra item 'into the pockets' might be problematic. In my opinion if a survivor has one more thing than it's limited would result in running disability. While having too much in pockets, two or more pistols kept behind a belt, two rifles strapped over a shoulder it's ain't the best condition to run, is it?

Hope so this thread will be read by devs (or if they have already, they will tell us what do they think about this).

Inventory system is fine, and it is probably one of the fastest and most efficient setups they could use for an inventory system. The problem with it is more about the player understanding how it works. Since I believe you can use 1..2..etc. and the scroll wheel to drop stuff. It is as simple as right clicking or pressing G (if equipped)

What I think is when we pull, for example, a machete of our inventory, that space should be clear for other things. hooooooooooowever, you couldn't switch between weapons. You should stick to that machete or just drop it. you know, that inventory should be to store things, since they're out...

thanks a lot

^Why? Even if you are holding it, it is still taking up space and has a weight. It's like sure your holding the pistol in your hand but that's still space that could be used to hold something else

This idea is nice. It should be so the more stuff you carry the slower you get. Its a great idea because it adds suspense to the game, lets say someone had full inventory and everyone started running but then the guy with full inventory is really slow then it makes a choice for the other players you could ditch your friend OR help him out. The person with the inventory also has choices, he could keep trying with all the inventory OR sacrifice some items to avoid getting killed.

Also being able to use first aid / bandage or even pills by aimming at them and pressing a button while they are not in your inventory would be good, hate to have to drop my weapon to take them and then take back the weapon.

EDIT: With a little time bar that fills (like when you wield) so it is not instant when it isnt in your inventory
