I'm athiest. My parents are devout christians and think I am too. I know that if I tell how I feel, they'd disown me. WHAT THE FUCK DO I DO! I hate religion. Everyone I know who has faith is an idiot. My grandparents are the dumbest people I know, and they're also the most religious. OH GEE WHAT A FUCKING COINCIDENCE. Same with my cousin, who is a racist, ass backwards fuck who needs to go extinct with the rest of them. Oh shit I just went way off-topic. Help would be appreciated, please be serious

Don't say a single word. Its really simple. If you go around on a high horse just because you're an atheist, you're not even a true to the definition atheist. Don't let anyone bother you, just keep an open mind to everything. I see too many atheists that are just atheists so they can go around and bash theists, while being no better and in most cases worse than the theists are (as far as pressing beliefs goes).

My parents know that I'm atheist, as do several of my closer friends, but no one else. I never, ever bring up the subject of religion with others unless I can't avoid it. It doesn't help anything.

Just tell them. My parents are both religious and they just don't talk about religion to me anymore after I told them. And I don't talk about atheism to them. We're on a pleasant neutral ground.

I agree with Booze. There are a lot of atheists whose favorite hobby is just to act like they're above everyone else by bashing theists. If your parents press the issue or something, then you may have to tell them. Hopefully a neutral ground will emerge like with stabbity, but if not, then they are making a serious mistake as far as parenting goes, in my opinion.

Everyone in my family and then some knows that I'm Atheist, I told them when I was 13 years old.

Depends on how old you are, because that determines if they will take you seriously or not. Or sit them down and have a serious discussion. Sit them down at the dinner table and say "Mom, dad, This is important and I feel I need to tell you this, but I don't believe in a God. I'm an Atheist and I need you to understand that."

Then tell them that you love them or some bullshit. lol

/me looks at Noobot.

Anyway, I agree 100% with Booze. They're not going to disown you for being an atheist... if they do, frankly, you're probably better off without them in the long run. Just keep your cool, and tell them.

I didn't mean to come off as bashing anyone, just stating what I've seen within my own family. I in no way see myself as being better because of my beliefs. I know that there are many intelligent religous type people, in fact I'm a dumbass a lot so they may be smarter than I. :P

I was definitley exxagerating a bit when I said they'd disown me, but they would still have a harsh reaction.

My brother is also atheist and when he told them they freaked out. BIG TIME. I think they're still living in denial about it. They want to believe he's religious, but the simple truth is that he's not, and neither am I.

So basically normally I would just tell them, but after seeing their reaction to my brother, I have become hesitant to tell them pretty much anything. I don't feel like I can open up to them, and I know this is hurting my relantionship with my parents and I want to try to fix that if possible.

I guess I'll just know the right time to tell them. Better sooner than later or never as well, I guess...

Any atheist actually worth their salt and an advocate of empirical deduction is actually an agnostic since the existence of God can't be proven or disproven.

But I say I'm an atheist and I'm sure others say it too just to make a point that we're as far from the stereotypical bible thumper as possible.

I also use the term "secular humanist".

You're an idiot. "God" can easily be disproven, it's called SCIENCE. Ask any Vent goer.

Gawd is very easily disproven,

The "Monster of the Andes" Pedro Lopez raped and murdered over 300 little girls. He promised that if he ever got free that he would return right back to killing innocent people, he was released in 1998. The Holocaust, Josef Mengele, Armenian genocide, etc.

I don't believe in god, and my parents doesn't care much about religion, they are however touchy about traditions, like going to church our national day, 17th May, and every Xmas, but these years they have accepted that i aren't with them sometimes, It's not like that they hate me for it.

EVERYTHING can be proven or disproven through science. That's why it's SCIENCE. Where as religion and the bible are constantly being proven wrong by science, Science has only ever been proven wrong by other science as a result of human miscalculation.

dealing in absolutes is truly the stupidest thing that mankind can do. our morals and the way we view the world around us has changed immeasurably over the course of human history, and it will continue to evolve long after we're gone. saying something is absolute and unshakable, or totally impossible is not only ignorant, but holds us back as a society, and prevents us from exploring those possibilities.

I'm going to have to disagree with Maxx on this one. I'm a semi-Christian/Agnostic - I am not fully decided either way. I hold nothing against any religious person or atheists - I couldn't care less about your religion (or lack thereof).

Science cannot disprove the existence of a higher power. It just can't. The Big Bang, Evolution, etc. - none of these rule out the work of a God. A God could have simply set these into motion. Now, does this mean that certain parts of religion are disproved? Perhaps. The Big Bang and Evolution, were they ever to be fully proved, would simply show that things didn't happen like they were said to have happened in the Bible. They don't, however, eliminate the possibility of a higher power.

Anyways, that's just my opinion.

Okay, here's a question, who created god? If it's so easy to imagine that god as always existed, why can't the universe have always existed?

Answering a question with another question, brilliant...its almost...theistic in its attempt to dodge an answer. :)

A response to jason's statement just made would be perhaps more beneficial to the discussion at hand.

For what its worth, I'm one of those rare religious existentialists. I hope you guys don't feel the need to curb stomp me with your superior view of the world.
