A community made theme pack for mappers?

9 posts in this topic

Has anyone given any thought into doing something like this?

I know there's a few really skilled modelers out there and a lot of people that are just learning via the use of Propper (me included) as well as texture artists and sound guys and I was wondering if anyone had shown some interest in coming together to make a community made model/texture/sound/prefab pack to be included with later releases of NMRiH. (Either themed or non-themed)

TF2 has had a lot of success with user made content and it would also allow people to add more content to NMRiH with out necessarily dedicating an enormous amount of time to an individual project or having to be a part of the team. The best part is that it would allow people to turn their ideas into something because people won't have to give reasoning to why they want to make a sand texture or a an army crate, they can just do it - submit it, and see how people like it - all without having to commit to a project that specifically requires that army crate or sand texture.

Obviously there would need to be a few requirements for a pack like this, the ones I can think of right now being:

  • Models would have to be properly scaled to their real world counter parts
  • Models & textures would have to be properly optimized for performance
  • All of the submitted content would need to be of a certain quality level
  • All of the submitted content would need to have it's license turned over to the NMRiH team - Although i'm sure they could include a credits.txt or something to show appreciation for the people that helped out

List of the most common content I would expect from a pack like this:

  • Models
  • Textures
  • Overlays
  • Sprites
  • Prefabs
  • Sounds (env_soundscape, door opening sounds, screams, all kinds of goodness!)
  • Map Examples (A vmf & compiled bsp with a museum of all the custom content etc)
  • Probably other stuff i've missed

Thoughts, suggestions?

Examples of community made packs for TF2:

We heartily endorse community content. We are not ashamed to ask for contributions either. If you make quality stuff, but aren't able to join our team for whatever reasons, anyone can still be a contributor to the mod. We can only make so much content with our free time. One thing we really want to put a call out for is character models. We want to give players a variety, but we don't have the resources to do so.

This is a very good idea, Finnigan.

I think this is a good idea as well. If you look online you can find so many custom models, skins, animations, textures all for games like counter-strike: source. Some stuff is really high quality, and hardly ever used. If some of this community could put some of this energy into NMRIH where it would really be appreciated. It would be great.

I, for one would welcome all the custom content we can get.

I really like this idea. A nice base for mappers to work off of would be much appreciated. As for the idea of character models, why not just add a way to use custom models? I blieve Garrysmod and HL2: DM have a skin selection system. It would be a cool addition. Just a suggestion and my 2 cents though.

Good to know that people are onboard.

I guess the next question is what kind of content would people like to see in a pack like this?

I can think of a few things just to get the brainstorming going:

- Road sign models with a wide variety of skins to choose from

- High resolution skyboxes

- City textures?

- Themed textures for different weathers (Or possibly a a themed texture pack with different "weathered" varieties?)

- Prefabs for cabinets or Dressers with E+drag to open drawers?

What I want is props. Really simple stuff. This doesn't have to be included in the build of the mod, it could just be a pack for mappers, and players to download on the forums. Other than that it could be packed into the map.

What I would like to see the most would be a texture pack, and a lot of custom props. Why not right?
