Well yes I'm still working on it, But I dont want to show too many pics now publicly and spoil the map. I'm trying to get it done so that it'll be in 1.07

Here is what to expect from the landscape around the house.

Progress on this map seems to be coming paynefully slow, ahahahhahahahha fun.

Does it lag up at all with terrain like that? I always want to build massive survival maps but am always afraid they'll be fps killers once populated with players.

The skybox is wonderful! :D

When it will be in 1.07 you'll bask in the glow of your deserved success!

No, because he knows what he is doing.

Yep. FPS still 50 - 60 strong for me in testing.. Which means each frame only takes about 16 milliseconds. When frames start taking like 30+ miliseconds each to generate then there is bad lag.

I'm changing a bit the map so that its not too non-fictional as in being set in the universe of the notld68 movie. But rather the house will now will be in the nmrih universe, so it will be like farmhouse that looks like the night of the living dead 68 some place nearby Harrisburg , Cumberland county Pennsylvania. The tall buildings in the back will be Harrisburg.

The city nearby helps explain the amount of zombies roaming the country side. I hope no one minds this change. But also in the movie it takes place in the same state near Pittsburgh.

Nothing wrong with modernizing the map a bit to keep the realism. But you can still keep many antic props in the house because a lot of older homes especially out in the country would still have a lot of these things :P

yeah wouldn't surprise me if some things that are very old are still used.. I'm using an ice cube tray from 1950. lol They really built stuff back then to last, not alike today manufactures build stuff so it breaks and you have to buy it again. Our capitalist society today is terminally ill with greed and unchecked expansion in a finite world.

No, because he knows what he is doing.

What are you, his spokesperson?

Is that you solo or with other players in those tests Payne? Solo I still get decent fps in my maps, I was under the impression that might all go to shit when other players join though.

I hate this new quote system.

The landscape is a fitted 3d skybox with rescaled props. Everything appears in the distance so there is not much detail required for it to look realistic like it does. Although, you are correct that it is not the most optimized design it is okay if the mapper experienced enough to make it work.

So, the map likely goes something like this:

Room A (outdoor around the house), and room B (low vis inside of the house).

This is very much like hershel's farm, or flooded.

Remember, I'm the same guy who tells everyone on these forums to conform to rooms and corridors.

Our capitalist society today is terminally ill with greed and unchecked expansion in a finite world.

It's also partly because companies that put in the R&D to produce something that never breaks tend to not have a lot of repeat customers and go out of business.

I remember hearing about Corning producing glass in the 60s for kitchenware that was so well made that it never broke when dropped - and therefore never needed to be replaced. So that's how the modern formula for Pyrex (under the same brand name as the unbreable stuff too!) became their main manufacturing focus, it breaks cleanly when dropped so it doesn't cut you but forces you to go out and get another set ;), similar stories apply for light bulb manufacturers. I don't know how much of it's rumors and how much of it's true, but you can't really blame them I guess.

Anyways, on to my map related question.

Are you planning on making a custom skybox texture?

I've been learning how to use Terragen 2 recently and I found some really interesting tutorials on converting GIS data (basically real world heightmaps) into terrain to help with creating really realistic renders. Looking online I was able to find what appears to be the GIS data for Butler County (where the cemetery was located), but can't find a location of where the Farm house used in the filming was :(

Either way, I think i'd be able to recreate a skybox based on footage from the film alone, and i'd love to see if I could come up with something that would do your map justice.

Let me know if you'd like some help with the skybox texture or if you've already got that area covered.

I looked for the house before beginning to make this map and couldn't find it. All I could find was it was on Old route 68 , near Evans city PA.

But I already have all the land area made and 3D box done, For a texture I'm just using the 512 x 512 tiling grass on a displacement turned into model that I cleaned up a in blender ( removed half the triangles) but it still lines up to the real displacements at the skybox walls. Its cheap and works. When your dealing with Source Engine your budgets are hair thin before you start getting weird lags and stuttering. So I can't have huge field like that around the house But I tried to make the back area huge, but the sides are pretty close to a road. I found the walker zombies take too long to get to the house from a large field backdrop.

For sure, i'm just talking about the actual 2D skybox texture. There's some great tutorials on the VDC about setting up cameras in Terragen to get some really nice skybox textures generated:

https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Skybox_(2D)_with_Terragen

http://www.archer-designs.com/tutorials/blending-terragen-2-with-gis-data/

The results can be really realistic, I didn't make this render but it's definitely in line with the type of capability you can expect from Terragen 2, there's a free version that lets you output 512x512 image renders as well:

traXMl.jpg

I don't know how it will look in a Source map since i'm still working through the tutorials, but i've been really impressed with the renders you can end up with and the map i'm currently working on (nmo_militarybase) doesn't have any purpose for a skybox this complicated at the moment as the majority of the map is spent in an underground bunker.

Will there be zones you have to defend on this map or will it just be a 'survive the waves' style similar to the Hershel's Farm map? Personally, I hope for the latter, i've never really enjoyed having to look after the zones, but upping the zombie count and putting players in intense, backs to the wall situations is something that really appeals to me.

This is looking really interesting though, it reminds me of the custom maps made for LOTD:RTFG, I believe someone made a NOLD Classic map for the survival mode in that.

Also, going off on a tangent, but someone who had played the now defunct LOTD online experience might remember the fantastic Day Of The Dead map that a modder called Trin made. I had some of the best online zombie survival experiences i've ever had on that map. That map was a good example of how to do backs to the wall zombie survival game-play.

Yes. I have played Trin's LMS. So have a few other people around here.

Any progress, Payne?

The progress has been InDev for few months already. That means, he (Payne) pretty much wont be updating this thread with media or stuff. In next media update we might have something to show from this map. :)

The map is getting more mature and near completion. I can't wait too see people playing it!

Here is as screenshot of the outside.

Look at that impressive lighting shining out of the windows. The picture's quality has an old classic style-ish horror movie pretty amazing I say.
