IGN:

IGN: How does zombie combat work? Are they hard to lose, do they move fast? Will we have to fight hordes of them at a time, or are they a bit more scarce?

Eric Nordin: Our zombies are moving slightly slower than you - so with enough patience and enough stamina you can lose them, but it’s not easy to do. Still if you don’t have a gun or run out of ammo and there are zombies in pursuit, there’s a good chance you can lose them. Also, zombies can’t climb ladders or scale walls, open doors, etc – so you get inside a house and barricade the door and you should be safe.

Depending on location you’ll encounter between one and literally many dozens of zombies at a time. Choosing the right tactics, movement, camouflage (for example you can buy “zombie scent” spray that will save you from being detected in certain situations) or weapon type (silenced weapons are the way to go) you can either end up killing dozens of zombies without being detected or will end up being attacked by hordes attracted by loud sounds, smell, etc.

The only thing that leaves me a bit cynical is the repetition of 'Dozens' and the Zombie scent spray. depending on how it's done it could wind up being a bit gimmicky/shit.

You can sign up for a chance to be in the Beta here:

The fact that this is a stand-alone game made from the ground up based around the theme makes me far more excited for this than any, even officially sanctioned, version of Day-z (The ARMA 2 engine can really kill immersion and just feel sterile).

Some of the stuff sounds a bit gimmicky, but it looks like it could be the next big thing.

Either way zombie MMOs aren't that common. Apparently you might be able to play on a private server, which is totally awesome.

I think the graphics and scenery are pretty damn beautiful. I want the world to feel alive, yet hopeless and menacing at the same time.

everyone has to play this with me, I hope to god it's not F2P and maybe one-time buy.

I'll keep my eye on it- but there is something odd about the pictures. It doesn't look right, it's pretty in some places but there's something wrong I can't put my finger on. It feels really bright when it shouldn't? especially in that last picture.

No that's just some low quality art in a lot of places. I hope it gets updated but its unlikely.

I wonder if this is gonna follow the path of all MMO's I've Played. The introduction is fun, usually with a unique aspect that makes it extra enjoyable (APB and its character customisation...and glorious soundtrack) and after having a bit of fun in the tutorials and first levels, I'm thrust into an open world populated by 60,000,000 identical characters and a few thousand top rank nobheads killing everyone for experience. Then I'm told to start more missions for which I have to wait several hours for in order to find a suitable game, whilst all the while being bombarded with "If you give us £50 we'll send you some digital coins to spend on your digital character"

Then after a week nobody plays it and then *Poof* it's dead

Apparently you can create your own private worlds too.

TBH if I preorder it and it turns out to be dumb then w/e it's a one time purchase for $30 which IMO is a good price.

-what the fuck just happened-

I hope I get into the beta. If I like it I will pre order it for sure. I always wanted such game - a big open world (mmo like world, exactly like in this case), zombie apoc and the ability to host private server.

Someone should host a private server for everybody lol.

the problem is who has the best internet and the best server. The greatest computer I have to spare is a measly dual core with 2GB of ram :c

I doubt it will be like that. I bet its just "rent a server", its not "host dedicated server".

Ok then - I am sure that we are not able to host a dedi server. Its rent a server only.

Either way I'm certain it will be fun.

From what I understand it's a one time payment and they claim that there'll be no "PAY £11.99 AND GET THE ULTRA MEGA UPGRADE PACK NOW YOU C**T" type stuff (apparently there wont even be DLC, all updates will be free, that means both fixes/new content).

The War Z Features: • Big open worlds to explore between 200 to 400 square kilometers

• Two modes of play: Normal and Hardcore

• Combination of first-person and third-person perspectives

• Meld of PvE (player versus environment) and PvP (player versus player)

• Strong Role Playing Elements

• Multiple playable characters with customizable features

• Unique social elements, including bounties, help requests, trap setting, etc.

• Safe settlements where players can purchase, sell and store items as well as post notes for other players

• Dozens of unique skills that can be learned and improved

• Up to 250 players per game server

• New weapons and items become available as players explore the game world

• Full developer support with regularly scheduled, free content updates

• Dedicated public servers as well as private servers that can be completely self-managed in game client

• Single purchase, downloadable client with ability to play full game without subscriptions or requiring in-game transactions

If i'm perfectly honest, i'm going to reserve judgement until there are a number of gameplay video's/I get to play it. It does sound good on paper, but it could wind up being a buggy mess or not as 'true' an experience as Day-Z in terms of the actual combat etc.

As for those screenshots, I actually thought they looked quite good:

I can see what you mean by 'bad art' but considering it'll be 250 players in a massive world, I can forgive it. Although the game doesn't seem to have been in development all that long which is a bit worrying considering they're already setting release dates.

Buggy mess would be about as 'true' an experience as it could get

So I can guarantee I won't be chosen for this since the only requirement is an email address. It's pretty sad when free HL2 mods have a more rigorous screening process than a commercial product.

I'm pretty sure they already passed the serious tests. Now is time for some marketing

Well, ya got me there. I must have forgotten the fact that every PC game that has gone through the internal testing process is virtually bug-free upon release. I can't think of a better way to generate hype than by randomly handing out closed beta keys to people that don't meet the minimum system requirements.

They gain beta access for every pre order. So you can pre-order the game, try out the beta and if you don't like it simply cancel your pre-order
