Map Design Contest: July 2012

July 14th - October 14th

Welcome to the very first map designing contest for NMRIH, well the first one hosted by myself. The point of the whole contest is for three months and players who enter can submit a map that follows the guidelines of the contest, but must be submitted before the deadline. The maps will be played, and judged and the top three maps will be chosen on certain variables such as intensity, difficulty factor, look, etc. Note: Maps must be playable!

To play the maps for the event, we will set up a team of "Judges" who will play each map that is submitted; this will usually be done in a group. So, if you have the ability of hosting a server for the judging going on, please say so. A list of judges will be added to the list, so they can add and play together, and this is how the maps will be judged on their "co-op" play. As mentioned above, the top three maps will be added with reasons why. There will be three places, so First Place, Second Place, and Third Place. With our reasoning behind the scoring. If you're applying as a Judge, you won't be able to vote on your own map. This means, Judges can submit their own maps but cannot vote on them.

July's Theme

Anything you want.

Map Submission Rules

  • Maps must support 8 players
  • Maps must be balanced. They shouldn't be too easy, or too difficult.
  • You'll have the freedom of making either Survival or Objective; but Survival is recommended.
  • Map submissions must have a name, description, game-type, and screenshots.
  • Only maps made during the three month time period will count.

Map Submission Sheet

Map Name: (The name of your map. Please make the names serious. Nothing like "Big Ole Titties")

Map Description: (Describe your map with at-least one paragraph. The setting, etc. Try crafting a story behind it; as to why the survivors are there.)

Variant: (Objective or Survival)

Screenshots/Videos: (Show at-least 5 screenshots, or a video of your map in action)

Download URL: (The download location for your map)

Submitted Maps

I think if you expect a large crowd of mappers to come pouring in for one month deadlines and parameters for their creativity you'll be sorely disappointed.

i dont like unfair "i have a fast pc so isolated is fine map" type of judging.

I'd try but my mapping skills are pathetic at best, I hope someone at least tries though. NMRiH needs some new maps badly.

Month isn't much time really, it's very little, especially for community mappers. You can maybe get some small survival map done in month maybe, but not much else unless you take shortcuts on design and looks. I'd suggest making contest at least 3 months, so people can brainstorm for few weeks and then get to mapping. This timeframe would also include time for setbacks if school/work conflicts with freetime, so mapper isn't right away doomed if plans don't work 100% (which they never do anyway).

Alright, I've just started mapping myself; and I'm pretty horrid at it. But, practice makes perfect right? I'll change the time to 3 months, and take away the theme. Let people have their freedom of creativity.

So, you converted a map from another game/mod to work on NMRIH? If so, it won't be accepted. Original maps only. Plus; follow the map submission guidelines if you're going to submit one.

i personally dont think the mod is "up and running" enough to be able to hold a contest. even gamebanana struggles to get entries with some of its contests...

I don't think you have to nor should you include a VMF, if you want one so badly decompile the map.

I can judge the raw material of the map, that it built properly.

If I ever made a map you aren't getting my VMF. I shouldn't have to hand them out either, and besides, you should be judging the actual map.

Fine, whatever you want, novice mapper.

Don't forget you also made the fullbright room once Morgoth.

It's hard to have a mapping contest when nobody can really play the game/test because of the issues Source games are having [crashing once reaching loading resources.]
