As a consumer...I may be an idiot

I was down in my basement organizing some things when I realized that I have experienced the joy of a videogame purchase 5 times...for one single game. I'm a huge Metal Gear Solid and Hideo Kojima fan so whenever something MGS releases I am all over it. Sadly, this also makes me an idiot (or blind to logical consumerism to be more accurate).

I beat Metal Gear Solid 3 after purchasing it during it's initial release. I then heard about a new version coming out that featured a fully rotating camera, much like Splinter Cell had at the time. Without taking into consideration that I already had experienced what there was to experience with the MGS3 story, I bought this in the anticipation to re-experience...the same experience...but with renewed vision. 360 degree rotating vision to be exact. Huzzah!

Then the collection was announced, and though I have a PS1 version of MGS, Xbox version of MGS2 and two MGS3 copies, I didn't have them all on one system and especially not in a fancy box! So I bought that. It remains unplayed.

Lastly of course, the new 3DS release of the game. In 3D... I took a look at the other copies I owned and saw nothing popping out of my TV. Also, my large LCD TV is a bitch to carry around with a car battery and AC/DC inverter. So, of course I felt obligated to show my true fanism by obtaining the best version and the best MGS3 experience that I could have at home and on the go. So I did. The opening was badass! I was shocked by how cool it looked in 3D as Snake halo jumped from a plane, hit the ground in a stylish manner while barely missing a fatal drop off a cliff (if he forgot he had a parachute that is) and off to battle the 3D jungle and digi-eat 3D snakes. ......3...2....1...BORED. Back to Tales of the Abyss and Mario.

Shit...When am I going to get it through my head that once I beat the game and experience it, I am not interested in doing it again regardless of what new gimmick it obtains? What I am buying is not a game I wish to play, but instead a sort of renewal on my nostalgic feelings of enjoying it the first time.

As a fan of a game or series, I put myself in a situation where I'm invested in it both on an emotional level and on a level of personal interest. This causes me to turn from the guy who sniffs out online deals and buys cautiously, to the person who has 4 copies of one game that I likely will never beat again, yet refuse to sell due to some kind of attachment that I can't even explain.

The plights of a gamer...

Rant over!

i bought oblivion 2 times (and torrented it once). i bought it for the pc, but i found out when i got home that my computer couldn't run it, so i held onto that copy and bought it for the xbox. played somewhere in the neighborhood of 600 hours on my xbox. upgraded my computer after that, installed the pc version played another 800 hours, i moved and during this time my copy got all scratched up and my computer died a while after moving so i had to get a new one and figured "i bought it for xbox and i bought it for pc, i'm not buying this fuckin game again"...so i torrented it and if bethesda has a problem with it, then it's a personal problem...i bought the game twice and the dlc...so...a lil slack would be appreciated in this instance.

i guess it really depends on how much you enjoy the game and what each new iteration provides. but if you don't even enjoy playing through it again and again then yeah that's bad. castlevania symphony of the night i own for the PS1, the 360 and on my PSP...but i've beaten the game 10 times and i still enjoy playing it. i didn't have a memory card for the ps1 (to use on my ps2) at the time and figured it'd cost as much as the 360 version, so i lazily bought the 360 version (only to have my xbox video die which i fixed a few weeks ago only to have my cat knock my xbox over so that doesn't work anymore), then my xbox got fucked so i went out and bought a memory card for my ps2 so i can still play my original copy and when i travel i like to have some games with me so i usually take castlevania, metal gear acid 2, patapon 2 and final fantasy tactics.

Well it's like Star Trek in that aspect, every odd numbered metal gear is fantastic while the even numbered ones are wacky and not as good =p

Normally I don't buy newer updated iterations of games but MGS is different, generally they add something to each newer version (MGS2 Substance had 400 vr missions and a load of extra content, MGS3 Subsistence came with better gameplay with the 3d camera and the two original MG games back for the MSX2 system, the PS3 version of the HD Collection gave MGS3 the processing power it needed to run at its originally planned 60 fps) so I don't mind buying those

Now going on about HD Collections, a lot of them are a waste of money; some like the MGS HD Collection and SotC/Ico HD collection are kickass since you know time was spent on them, while others like the Silent Hill and Resident Evil collection were an obvious cash in (Silent Hill HD Collection looks even worse artistically which is silly)

I actually have trouble with things like this, I've bought several copies of games, and also books just because I felt so attached... and I don't even want to begin to explain. I also feel that if I like something so much, I will sometimes buy more than one copy or whatever because I feel like I'm investing in something I love, like I want to donate money to the developer for making something so good, you know?

Simple solution. Next time you feel like donating to those poor helpless multi million pound developers, stop and give the £60 to a homeless person, or heart research for abused blind dog children or something. Or buy shoes.

I've bought Fallout 3 and Oblivion 3 times each (well, twice for Fallout 3 since Maxx got me one copy). Once for PC on release, once for 360 GOTY and once for PC GOTY when it goes on Steam sale.

There are games I have doubles of for different reasons, like Mass Effect 1 & 2 I have a PC and 360 version of. Had it first on 360 and got attached to my character. Then a Steam sale got me ME1 & ME2 for like......$12 or $15 bucks, so I wanted it on PC because it's honestly much better on there. So then I had my 360 character and PC character to play off of. I didn't get ME3 on 360 though.

This is different when its something that was so cool and so impacting to me on a gaming standpoint while growing up. I get this sense that if I don't buy it, to support Snake, that some illusive man out there would judge my entire MGS fan'ism negativity.

It makes no sense honestly.

Homeless people are homeless because they choose to be. I don't believe in heart research:3 AND IM sick of buying shoes from smaller companies and really loving the brand then they go out of business <_< trololo

i also have fallout 3 on the 360, the pc and torrented goty edition (pretty much for the exact same reasons as oblivion). i own gta 4 for the 360 and then i saw the entire gta series on the pc for like $15 so i got that as well.

Plus some more I'm probably forgetting.

stop and give the £60 to a homeless person

Another homeless dude stabs him for it and Kreia mumbles disapprovingly at you. I'm not falling for that shit again.
