The Dead Linger - Open World Zombie Sandbox

65 posts in this topic

Hello everyone. My first time on these forums with one purpose really to promote a game I have been following. I hope you welcome me and don't think I'm a spammer. Oh and I hope this is the right section. Enjoy the read :)

This is a game that I have been watching intently for months. Firstly let me say it is a game in development by Sandswept studios and an alpha release is expected in the coming months April - June so you can't play it yet. There is a small highly active community over at their forums:

Dead Linger

Also let me say early on that the development team interact fully with the community reading every post and replying to most, so if you have a good idea they will do a pretty good job to put it in the game if it works in theory.

  • Now down to the game, its basically a randomly generated world, think minecraft. Currently cities, rural areas, mountains, lakes and forests are planned. Oil-rigs are on the list suggesting seas and more terrain (biomes) will follow later in development.
  • The game is going to be quite realistic, little if no HUD, no health (bar and no red mist), items will be where you expect them eg guns only in gun shops, military bases (very rare), few houses.
  • Melee weapons are in and you can pretty much use anything as a weapon but I doubt a flowerpot is good against a few zombies
  • You can craft items, and its gonna be pretty wide, mix a bear trap with a Molotov and what do you get? A Molotov bear trap no less. Freeform crafting is being discussed as the whole crafting system is not set in stone. That would allow you to combine anything with almost anything, stick and grenade, gun and flashlight ect.
  • You can build, so using planks barricade a building and build you own buildings, thats a pretty simple example I thought of off the top of my head but you get the picture. This will be a big part of the game and not just a small afterthought.
  • Vehicles are planed later in development, so cars and a fuel system. Driving, like everything is realistic, go too fast, hit something, say hello to the windscreen for me, if you are not dead already of course. Helicopters and aircraft are being considered and there difficulty too, not everyone knows instantly how to pilot one you know. Railroads/Subways are being considered.
  • Realistic physics, you can pick up pretty much everything, you know what I mean.
  • There is both multiplayer and singleplayer along pvp and hardcore. So clans have begun to form ready for battle and just plain old surviving. The servers are privately run by players as like most pc games.
  • Graphics will be quite good and will improve as alpha and beta progress, they will be on a level with Stalker in the beginning but that will improve.
  • There is hunger which will decrease over and as you do actions, moving, walking, climbing ect. Thirst is in and it reduces the risk of infection.
  • World is persistent. Items won't respawn and if you leave your base for a while, leave the gate open, theres a good chance it will be infested with zombies so please, for your friends sake, close the god dam gate! :P
  • The world is 25,000 km squared in area, have fun getting there.
  • There is a day and night cycle. If you go out at night be prepared, you pro. Currently its a 2 hour cycle but this may change.

Thats all I can remember currently, and that's off the top of my head, there plenty more to be learned. I would advise any of you that are interested to head over to their forums and read up on some of the topics. Feel you can add to the game? Then open and account and suggest away, but make sure you use the search function as it's possible your idea may have already been discussed.

If any of you got any questions I will try and answer them to the best of my ability.

There are some models that can be soon on there blog which is updated regularly with more and more posts coming up to alpha and beyond: The Dead Linger

The Dead Linger is now on Kickstarter and is doing amazingly with 6 days gone over 60% funded. Psst... Even Notch bought a copy ;)

The Dead Linger on Kickstarter

Also the Design Director, Geoff Keene has realeased a video calling for support,

You can add me on Steam if you want to ask me more, Id: Eoino

Or on the Sandswept forums by the same name. Internet isn't using the same name for everything much easier?

Help support what is sure to be a great game :)

Thanks for the welcome Ouij.

So what about non-zombie NPC's.. any plans for those, like any traveling merchants or the like? Animals?

Currently there are no npcs, hostile or friendly. They may come later in development and if so you could trade with them and such, or they would try to kill you. Npc's are really just suggestions atm so nothing is confirmed

Sounds like what the maker of Fable said before that came out on Xbox. Regardless I am interested but tapped for cash at the moment.

sounds too good to be true to be honest, but I would love to see this project realized

Sounds really amazing, I am skeptical as to whether it will come to fruition or not, but I donated in hopes that it will. Seems really amazing, actually exactly what I would want in a zombie game.

I will believe it when I see it. But the work right now is not at all impressive nor astounding. To me, it comes across for 5 years of ones own doing in the making a bit odd to me that his work, and be that the work presented. Looks like it was done by someone who has realistically been working for about 3 to 6 months as a beginner.

Donating at this point to such a project would be a foolish thing to do. I would much rather take my money donations to a hot stripper grinding on me. Than to support something that has no real clear destination for its production value.

1) They have only been working for the past 6 months, you may know this, me not understanding probably

2) They have released a previous game on steam, Detour. very simple but still a recognised game

3) They are going to release footage "very soon", meaning next few days or week. Well before the end of kickstarter.

My main goal of coming here was to raise awareness not to take your money. I'm am just a simple forum member who has taken the duty upon myself to spread word about what I think is an awesome "idea"

Looks like a scam to me.

Refer to number 2+3 above

They already have released a game on Steam unless this was a heist years in the making

Not sure about this. All Sandswept can show so far are a couple of props, models and concept art. 60.000 bucks and half a year is a JOKE for the game they are planning to make, even if they had all the time in the world for pre-production. Sandswept consists of 9 people. They have one game under their belt, a 5 Euro STEAM-dl thing that didn't look that "amazing" to me and on which they worked 3 years.

I mean, I'm really hoping they can pull it off, and I honestly think they'll put all they got into this, but I find the whole thing highly suspect. By that I don't mean I don't trust their good intention and motivation, but their ability to pull off what they set out to do. An Alpha by the middle of THIS year? It's April and the 6 month full-time work period would start next month if all goes well, which apparently it does with 50.000 donated and 22 days left to go. That means the 6 months end in January/February 2013. That's kind of confusing. No engine named either.

Also, Class 3 is in production, a very similar game, financed by motherfucking Microsoft.

Let me make it clear that I LOVE these guys for what they are trying to do, and I'd love a game like that, but I doubt they'll be able to pull it off. Also, they'll need donations again for the Beta. Then the finished version. No estimates whatsoever concerning how much time and money they'll need in total. Maybe they'll get a publisher after Alpha and Beta have been financed by Kickstarter contributors and the publisher fucks it up.

I'm just saying I'm not convinced. I'd love for Sandswept to succeed in this because IMHO their passion and enthusiasm are commendable, and I'd love to play this game if it is like they say (albeit information on what it's going to be like is still pretty vague), but I'm not getting my hopes up just yet.

I like the song though.

-snip-

Even footage wouldn't convince you?

1) The game has already been in development since last year.

2) After Alpha release in a few months the game would be on sale similar to Minecraft and it's realease style. These would reduce the need for more funding.

3) The engine has been named, Ogre 3D

4) Class 3 is an arcade game with a publisher hanging over it

5) Development on this game will continue for numerous years after launch, the same I doubt can be said about Class 3.

6) Not all game devs want to screw people over for money, even though that is the general objective.

I'm sure I could make many more comparisons to Class 3 but that's not why I'm here.

I would advise for you to spend some time on the forums and reading them. Who knows you may feel enlightened. ;)

you do understand some of the concerns right? simply comparing their previous work to their ambitious promises must at the very least tingle your spidey senses

What footage is supposed to convince me?

1) ...yet all they have to show for it is some concept art and a couple of props and models. We're also talking about a team of 9 people here. Yes, they are hiring atm, but that is usually a lengthy process and especially hard when it's crucial to have a small, but very competent team.

2) That depends on what they deliver with the Alpha, and when.

3) I hope they already have loads of experience with it and a c++ genius on the team. Or five.

4) Class 3 is an arcade game? Where did you get that from?

5) Class 3 is going to develop into Class 4, which is supposed to be built on the foundation of Class 3. Also, before continuing to work on a game for years after its release, it has first to be released.

6) I've never said that. In no way am I trying to discredit or disrespect Sandswept. I'm not worried about them trying to con people, I'm worried about them not being able to pull it off (the game, not the con).

I love small companies like Sandswept who are in it because they are passionate about games and are actually RUN by people who are passionate about games. I'll take a studio like Sandswept or Double Fine over most major developers any day because of the LOVE FOR GAMES (and in this case, zombies) connecting us, so I'm totally on Sandswept's side, but a project of this magnitude in the hands of such a small studio is... tricky. Not impossible, but there will be countless unforeseen problems, delays, broken promises, disappointments and shattered illusions, not to mention nagging and complaining fans (right, devfags? <=) ).

I am not questioning that Sandswept intends to make an incredibly awesome zombie game and is going to put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into it; I'm merely sceptical about their ability to pull it off based on what was presented so far in regards to Sandswept's portfolio as well as the game itself. I hope I'll be positively surprised.

I'll also follow your advice and check out their forums. I was going to anyway. :)

Sounds kind of similar to Dead state, and then-some (though thats a full blown RPG)

Dead state

And not to be a dick, but this does sound a bit too good to be true. There are quite a few of these massive, grandiose projects that basically make out they're going to redefine the genre they're set in:

D-day 1944 - The game at its core is driven by a highly adaptable AI system, this AI system controls over 250,000 units in real-time. Moving them all around the battlefield and adapting their orders, objectives and tasks to an every evolving battlefield.

It sounds awesome, but again, I am also extremely skeptical, there are just way too many promises. This random beginner studio promising such a large game and with graphics comparable to the first STALKER? They've only been working on it for 6 months.

Also, another kickstarter game? I understand people need help to create games, but there have been SOOO many kickstarter games since that one game got a million dollars.

Sounds waaay too good to be true. Like Dead Island back in 2007.

Turned out to be a disaster from what the devs originally said.

Also, what happened to dead nation? I remember that game.

And the devs there are really screwed.

At least the mod called nmrih has great devs. Super fun bros.

Actually their office was broken in to and everything stolen.

And as of right now, they're back to where they were, plus a ton of other content, and new systems. The game is looking incredible right now.

I haven't really stayed with the gaming times lately.

Anybody know a good site where I can stay in touch with what new games are releasing, etc...?

I used to visit facepunch, but I can't stand the community anymore.
