What happened to Black and White Originally... Spooky-mode?

18 posts in this topic

I think maybe we had this discussion before on NMRiH's once-future idea to be able to let people play in a black-and-white mode to remenisce Romero's Black and white zombie movie film-gig.

If it's such a problem, maybe it'll look better by having the black-to-white contrast kind of fade... with more of a shadow-blur BUT OF HORROR and NIGHTMARE(dream) and not as if you're already infected.

Sure, we can imagine NMRiH in plain black and white... but what if you also increased the "horror intensity" of black and white? Which I reiterate as: making the black-to-white contrast blur. OR the blackness of it have a "special" blur that speaks horror after every corner you pass. It's supposed to siginify a dream; an imagination.

I think NMRiH maps in general should have that "feel" of a dream... horror... imagination... as my dreams were.

I MEAN, you ARE reading from someone who has HAD WAY MORE DARK AND... GLOOMY DREAMS (NOT EVEN NIGHTMARES) that I ACTUALLY LOVE SO MUCH and I hope to have more... and I am afraid of every forgetting them... but really.. they can come back... I just have to relax... and LIVE... what it is to live... I mean... dreams of walking from night street lights down onto a road with none at all... just walking... into the darkness... I've had many.

The only zombie dream I had took place EARLY in the morning, ADN ONLY INSIDE THIS BUILDING... until the end when we had to run. The sky was a dark, light blue... very dark(early) but ... somehow grayish blue... so distinct in color... The interior felt the same as being outside... Doors needed to be locked... Rooms to be afraid to open the door into. There was a train to escape on and it started leaving slowly and we had to catch up and run. I think before I failed to catch it, I woke up.. or when I caught it and got on, I woke up.

I remember this, they where talking about a monochrome setting for the die-hard night of the living dead fans!

It was just an idea our old sound designer Beckett had a while back. We did add in a hint of it with our current damage system but as for a full gamemode, I can't say. We might add on something like a cvar similar to how we have sv_realism mode.

why discriminate all the beautiful colors

The nmrih dev team is known to discriminate against colour people.

Its even better this way if you ask me, think about it--It always gets more suspenseful when your injured, this way it goes black-and-white the more injured you are, with 10 HP being completely so, it makes the game ALOT more intense.

Would be great to see this feature implemented sometime if the devs find the time. It's not something that too many other mods/games have, and combined with the oldschool music the "spooky mode" could be really interesting.

I didn't want to make another "what happened to..." topic so I'm asking here, hope that's fine. Is there any chance of seeing nmrih_citylife being incorporated (back) into NMRiH's official maps list someday? I remember it as one of the classic levels, it was featured in a lot of updates you guys did, such as in the demonstration of blood-tec, etc. :)

WAIT WAIT! Is Beckett no longer in the team? Does that mean that the optional 'old school' soundtrack he was working on isn't going to make it? please say those Romero sounding songs will still make it! PLEASE! :(

I was just about to post about the soundtrack. I remember the samples that used to be on the website, one or two resets ago. Is the music in the mod now by the same artist or did he pack up and take his work with him?

Beckett contributed almost all the major tracks we use to this day, for free. I still talk to him every once in a while and he has made us a track very recently. If we and or when we ever decide to make an oldschool gamemode it's not like we don't know where to contact him.

Yeah I take back anything I fucking said. I actually hate all that I created. What happened to Beckett?

Good point, Zergling.

However, I do remember the idea circulated when I first joined NMRiH forums. This means Beckett had to be here before the sound team we currently have came along. I'm pretty sure I read about the idea before they introduced themselves.

What's the difference when it's just a game? And somehow adults like their black and white movies better, or some of them? I'm not hating or descriminating, but I do know a couple.

Why not just have a mapper convert all the textures into black and white and make a black and white map? WOULDN'T THAT BE FUNNY? Everything but the players, zombies, and guns would be black and white! If only there was a program that can convert ALL colors to all textures and props...

the thing is with liking b/w movies is that it evokes a certain feeling of nostalgia, we don't have an era of b/w games.. only 8 bit :P

Black & White effect is actually easy thing to implement, just by using ColorCorrection and make it desaturated (=b&w). This way you can have it by enabling ColorCorrection and if you want colors, you just turn off CC from video settings. Converting all textures to b&w would bloat build's size alot, because that's how things work.

I hope you devs put something funny, similar to minecraft's FOV slider;

Controls how much of the game world is visible on the screen. Ranges from 70° (Regular) to 110° (Quake Pro)

you could have a slider that sets the colour balance:

Controls how much the game's colours are vivid on screen. ranges from +100% (Wizard of Oz) to 0% (Regular) to -100% (Nazi Scum)

the only thing I don't really want in the mod is gamma correction, causes people to be able to see in the dark if they set Y > 1, unless they add some bounds to it it should not be implemented.

Say something like 1.2 > Y

Graphics slider also:

Ultra

High

Medium

Low

you can allways use third party software like ur videodrivers tools or by the monitor it self to change these settings, so locking this option wont work

Yeah, Morgoth, shit liek that makes me want to make maps where there is no use for people trying to turn their gamma up high.

I like thinking of maps that don't always have a bunch of lights for the player. I want to give players experiences... to heighten up their genitalia from playing such a kickass map... to succeed the pressure they put on their thighs as they sit in a chair.
