This map is a bit of a shot in the dark dark (no pun intended) but so far everything has been working out really well. As stated, in execution the map plays a lot like an multiplayer version of HL2's coast map, but with zombies :P. You drive though a semi-linear map and stop at key locations a long the way.. some of them optional, and some as objectives.. though optional locations will contain goodies to reward players for exploring ;)

The premise is that you're in rural Montana (or some state like that) and you have to cruise forlorn mountainous highways in an armored milk truck for salvaging and supply-runs. The catch is, everything is going wrong. You're running out of gas and the sun is going down, so you need to keep the truck fueled and accomplish your immanent tasks, and find your way back to camp a few kilometers away before nightfall. The map will take you through highways, tunnels, towns and raw terrain and vegetation to accomplish your objectives. It will be very large and I hope to include a lot of non-linearity features, such as alternate roadways and even shortcuts to take on foot if players decide to split up.

Here's some initial screenshots (I'll update progress in new posts), keep in mind that the map is very early. it's also quite likely that the lighting and atmosphere and story backdrop will be subject to radical changes. (for instance, Im considering a rainy daytime setting)

and heres the "crapmobile" itself. So its made of brushes.. big whoop, wanna fight about it?

Its a W.I.P. It's gonna take a while unless you love maps with ultra buggy Func_tracks and no zombie spawns.

EDIT: I was just told by hypno toad its made with Thrusters. Not Func_Track

Very good work you have there sir. Will there be downloads soon?

Not for a fair bit of time. What you see in the overhead shot is just an insignificant fraction of what will be done.

I'm focusing more "quantity over qaulity" the maps lighting and aesthetic will be good and overall the map will LOOK good, but the level of detail overall wont be huge, since you may just be driving past most areas. Its meant to have sort of a staggered pace and a lot of movement freedom, and even dare I say it, an exploration aspect since you'll need to find gas, weapons and ammunition, etc.

Not a func_track, btw. The thing is physics operated (5 props), and overall it handles quite well and I haven't experienced any really serious issues. Though it's not completely idiot-proof so pick your driver carefully ;)

Here's the crummy truck interior. The truck itself isn't great, but it lets you traverse and explore the map fairly well.

I'll probably add some more stuff later (like a steering wheel...)

Will the vehicle be able to damage zombies?

I talked to Hypno Toad about that as an Idea, instead when you run over a zombie the car would slow down by activating a reverse thruster that pushes it backwards when the car is in motion. But it probally will though. (Idea Whore).

Yeah, as drescher said I will probably implement a system for running zombies over.

In short, yes I'll make it so it kills zombies, but I dont want the map to be a giant fender-bender, so I'll add a reasonable penalty for running zombies down. As for raw physics damage, Im not sure. Ive noticed a lot of mods dont have damage from physics objects.. Ill be testing that in a moment.

Little run-through video. keep in mind its very wip, and there's some placeholder sounds in there.

I've got the splash-screen whipped up too

Very cool progress. I'm curious to see how gameplay will be.

This looks promising. :)

I can see it already, Zombies coming out of nowhere swarming me. lmao.

BTW, can you edit the vehicle and maybe give the option of opening the back door? It would be cool to shoot out of it while being chased by runners. :3

Maybe the truck can be slower then runners? because It is armored, Maybe its weighed down?

I just hope some objectives will be like: getting rid of road blocks, fix the engine, start cars and or push them to get them out of the way, lower a bridge, get fuel, remove a spike-strip, replace one of the tires, buy a Twinky at the gas n' go, stop by the street and give kids some ice cream, etc etc.

The truck is slow, but currently I don't have much of a way to make the truck vulnerable to zombies, though I am planning on making the doors open/close, where if they are left open, zombies can enter the vehicle.

Currently the plan right now is to make it so the objectives themselves are fairly treacherous. Not to mention the roads will have numerous obstacles that you will need to clear or navigate around.

Due to engine limitations the interior and exterior of the truck are separate entities, Ive just done a clever job of hiding that ;)

Though you may be happy to know it is possible to ride on top of the truck quite stably if you stand still. (no crouching or moving)

Though if you do that in the actual game you will probably just get thrown off by my horrible driving. Also, plans to add a giant penis onto the truck, or completely replace it with this.

Kudos to the devs, turns out you can assign a "target" to zombie spawns, so they'll head towards it. The truck is the target now ;)

Prepare to defend the truck from swarms of undead

Ugh, balance that out, I'd hate 15 zombies walking slowly to the van while were scavenging for items, I'd say have only like 5 zombies targeted to it and have a large spawn time on it for every wave of them.

Hello,

I am in college at the moment, but I have some spare time that I could work on making a truck model & interior if you want. I am a basic modeler, but I think I could put something together.

I also have some ideas.

Your objective is always gas. have a math counter for the gas min and max and when the truck is moving lower it and if there is no gas then the truck stops and when the gas enters the truck it adds to the math counter.

And to prevent people from camping in the truck and not dieing, since your going to block zombies getting in, make a trigger hurt in the truck that turns on for a second when the truck takes damage from a zombie. But you would need to find a way to make zombies attack the truck or just make zombies near the doors a bad idea. Or just let them in the truck.

Well if you like the offer add me. id/fire451

Been a while since the last update. Put some more work into it.. I've got about 95% of the roads done, so Ill be working on the objectives soon.

As for objectives I think I'm going to have multiple car obstructions in the dark tunnel that the survivors need to push out of the way, there will be a semi-truck pileup near the roadside market/weighin station in which players will need to open up a sidepath and drive around the market. In the town the armored milk truck will run out of gas, and you'll need to raid the gas station and a nearby auto part store for various supplies (there`ll be other stores and homes with various other goodies in them), on the long strip of highway there'll be a "highway of death" type scenrio and you'll need to take a drive along a derilict cliffside roadway to get around it, in the "boonies" section I think I'll have a a zombie infested motor-inn that you need to wade your way through (I`ll think of a reason why)

I'd still like more ideas though so if you can think of something feel free to write it down.

In the mean time heres two shots. Ive started using a new type of tree card that I feel looks a lot better:

Heres an overhead shot of the map:
