Bioshock Infinite

18 posts in this topic

So, a new Bioshock game is announced, called "Bioshock Infinite"

It's being made by a different developer, here is the teaser trailer:

Yeah, it takes place in 1912 in an air city. The city is called Columbia.

It's being made by the original BioShock team.

Ken Fucking Levine. That is all that needs to be said.

I laughed more than I should have, when they panned across that banner with the woman throwing away her baby, with the slogan "Burden not Columbia with your chafft"

The plot has something to do with you, an agent or some shit, rescuing some girl named Elizabeth from that city.

That's unfortunate. I had been hoping the entire game would revolve around plummeting to one's death countless times.

That's the censored cover. Although that's probably the best censored cover ever.

That dude getting pissed about his hat may be the guy who threw you out the window in the first trailer, or just someone else that is wearing what looks like is called a "Bettermen's Auto Body".

ultra necrobump!

It's been released. I haven't played it yet but I'm pretty sure a bunch of you are working through it. Thoughts?

More importantly, is it worth a buy/dl?

Yeh, buy it. i just wish i'd pre-ordered it so i could've got an extra copy of X-com.

I'm suprised how much i'm liking it, it's a bit slow to start and far more action oriented, but it's grown on me (as has the setting, I wasn't really liking it at first). Considering how little I followed this game during it's development, it's been a very pleasant suprise.

And if the prospect of ghostly, robotic, chain gun wielding statues of george Washington as AI companions doesn't sell it to you, I don't know what will.

Also, Ken Levine stole the idea of a floating city from George Bluth sr.

They should've called the game Bluthton: Infinite.

ouji would say otherwise. he'd say save your money...better yet...spend it on blunts and 40 oz. OE 8hunded

also never listen to stabbity when it comes to games...he says every game is great...he's never once said a game isn't great right after it comes out. oh and don't listen to online game reviews...you need to find someone with really close tastes to you who has played it and ask them. don't talk to strangers, take their candy or their advice. you can trust me...i gots a pipe

Without spoiling anything...

I enjoyed roughly the first half of the game. The environment and atmosphere initially overshadowed the problems, even though it feels more like a theme park than an actual city (even more so than Rapture). Eventually you begin to question why such an incredibly linear game feels the need to hold your hand the entire time. You meet up with Elizabeth fairly early-on and, from that point onward, you don't even have to try anymore. Low on health, ammo, money or salt? She immediately finds it and throws it to you. Thinking about exploring to find hidden items? That's okay - she'll just highlight them with a purple aura. Admiring the scenery? "Booker, I bet you could open that door!" Oh thanks, because I was lost and didn't think to try the only exit from the area. The game is so on-rails that you literally ride on rails and it still assumes you're both lost and stupid.

Most of the tech-y / lore-y things in the game are brushed off with "Well, you see, quantum mechanics are a...uh...you know, and the science...force equals mass times velocity and...particles..." - they just don't even try. At least in the first two you knew you were a badass because you injected yourself with deep sea slug poop. It wasn't brilliant but it was something. In this one, there are "vigors" that you drink that, for some reason, enable you to defy the laws of nature. I had a grape drink and now I can shoot lightning. You know why? Uh, because salt, dumbass. That's just basic quantum biology. Humans are salty and more salt = more power. That's why Stacy Keach can levitate.

The enemies are boring. You start off fighting generic people with guns and, by the end, you're fighting generic people with guns and more hitpoints. The "Heavy Hitter" enemies are worse because they're even more predictable and can generally be defeated with circle-strafing. The combat is unsatisfying and it pulls that 2 weapon limit bullshit that's all the rage these days. Even the powers are a mix between practically useless and been there, done that.

The story goes from rehashed to godawful "2deep4u" navel gazing. There's no rpg-style character progression, meaningful choices or challenge. There isn't even a little diversion like the hacking minigame from the previous two. I could go on, but few people will even read this far so...

TLDR; This game getting perfect 10's from reviewers is a joke. Chess is a perfect 10. At best, this game starts off as playing Kerplunk while high and, halfway through, it immediately downgrades itself to Hungry Hungry Hippos - only with balls of cat shit instead of marbles.
