Modeling-What programs you use, and tuts?

27 posts in this topic

Could you all tell me what programs you use to make models, any good tuts, and if I pirated the program, and go decent, would I still be able to help? Or would I need to buy it. BTW, I have a LITTLE bit of experience with the program RHINO. I hate it. Lol.

How about searching from google? Seriously, you'll find thousands of tutorials and shit. Tutorialized.com is one good site with tutorials in easy lists.

People use a lot of different programs. 3ds Max, Maya, XSI, ZBrush. It also depends on what you're really wanting to make.

Don't focus on just picking a specific package.

Instead focus on learning one of them. 3dsmax, maya, and xsi are all popular programs. Pick one. Learn it. Move on if you want to.

What is most compatible with Source? And also, as stated before, if I pirate it, and get good, could I still help the mod? Or would that cause legal problems?

The most compatible with Source would be Softimage|XSI, but it is a shitty program in my opinion. Our team uses 3D Studio Max 2010.

I doubt you will "get good" in such a short period of time, because in order to join the team you need to be able to not just model but also unwrap and texture. Not that I'm discrediting you, just saying it might take longer than you think to get the workflow down.

Okay thanks for the info man. And idk, I get the hang of programs pretty easily. And weapons, while having complex shapes, aren't really THAT complex. Especially since most everything is symmetrical.

They really are. I mean seriously the unwrapping of weapons is really quite annoying. You also have to remember that they are a very dominate feature of the screen and so will need to have a high level of detail. But anyway good luck. Also if you choose 3ds max search for racer's and stormy's weapon tutorials. I have heard good things about racer's (not watched it myself) and stormy's is very good.

Thanks man :)

and idk, I think I might be able to handle it.

I don't mean to burst your bubble or sound like a douche but it isn't that easy. It takes a lot of practice. I've been doing this for about a good 8 or 9 years now though I didn't use tutorials. It takes a lot of work. Best of luck to you, though.

I consider myself pretty good with most programs I use, but DAMN 3ds Max is a bitch. Modeling is just not for some people.

I have a lot of respect for 3D modelers because for the life of me I can't do it. I'll stick to Hammer and simple texture work in Photoshop.

What makes it so extremely difficult? Like I said, I've modeled things in RHINO before. Which is awful for user-friendliness. And even though I didn't create anything that complex, I created some ok looking things. And I had maybe 2 weeks experience with it or less.

But I guess until I actually see for myself, I'll take your word for it. You'd know better then I do.

Cause like, I plan on getting into the field of making games for a living. But I honestly don't know what area I really want to specialize in. Modeling has always been intriguing though.

If you want to be 'pro' modeler, you must be able to model anything, not just boxes and mobile phone models or some other easy things taught in beginner tutorials. I got hang of doing usb memory, tricycle, vending machine and other easier things almost in few weeks from opening the program, but when it comes to something complex.. well, I haven't tried yet.

If you got the money to spend. Buy it. Not only is it right, but it's worth it, really.

But if you can't afford it. Meaning buying this program means your not going to eat for a few weeks and you don't really see your economic situation getting any better, don't deny yourself a leg up.
