Welcome to my convoluted and probably pointless review of L4D2!

This game, this fucking game... Anyways

Overview:

The new survivors:

Coach: Big burly black guy, he's alright.

Nick: Annoying but tolerable, and sometimes cool. Basically a zombie Tommy Vercetti.

Ellis: Easiley the best new character to the game, basically an amalgamation of Francis and Louis, my 2 favorite characters from the previous game. His incessant usually non sequitar statements and stories add an intersting dynamic to him and he's basically the only character with a background and who isn't completely flat.

Rochelle. Some black black person no one cares, about, has the most annoying death scream ever, and was poorly acted too.

Gameplay: The same basic gameplay. The game does add freshness with the new SI, which are actually quite fun and probably the best addition to this game. Overtly simplistic in it's style, yet still has some richness in it's depth, the game does a decent job of keeping things a bit fresh each time, although not nearly as much as the original. A lot of people say the original felt like a beta, but compared to the sequel, it felt like a polished finished game and something that I can almost, hell, will acknowledge as a “Valve game”.

New weapons:

All the new guns are pretty much just reskins of the old ones, the only new one being the Magnum Pistol which is cool. Other than the Dessert Rifle & the new Military Sniper, all the guns feel exactly the same. The melee weapons are the same, with a number of choices, they are all the same except for the chainsaw which is a really cool weapon that even has a gas meter that you have to watch.

Bile bomb is pretty much useless, and can make things worse as it brings a horde to you. Adrenaline shot is cool and has a neat audio effect, and in tight spots is very useful and probably better than peelz.

The defibulator, oh god the defibulator. Team mates are dead? Revive ‘em. Fucking. Retarded, especially since it’s in versus, so you could spend half a map trying to down someone only to have them magically revived in 5 seconds. Also we ended up killing each other TO HEAL EACHOTHER because we found 4. I quote infr4mer on this, “this game is so fucking retarded” about that game.

New mode: Scavange mode, basically the finale of Dead Center (collecting gas cans to fill up a generator) to keep a timer going until it runs out or they collect all 16 cans. Like VS, there are 2 teams that switch off each round. Whoever collected the most cans at the end wins the round, with best 2/3 or 3/5 or 4/7. A fun new addition, but pretty dissapointing that this is the only new mode in the entire game.

The new campaigns:

Dead Center: More like, "Center of brown corridors". The mall was completely dissapointing and despite being the highlite of the map, is the worst part. There's not enough bullshit ads anywhere, everysingle shop is boarded up, there's nowhere to explore and the lighting is poorly done. I don't think I've ever seen a mall that has this much brown everywhere, and it's far, far too linear. On the upside, the finale's have been changed from the standard "camp the corners" thing that everyone else did, by forcing you to collect gas tanks and fill up the escape vehicle of Jimmy Gibbs Jr.'s car.

Dark Carnival: Easiley the best new campaign. Carrying around the Gnome adds an interesting gameplay twist that's optional. A fairly original environment that's not seen in too many games. Also has one of the better finales, which is a bit ironic considering it's the standard sit and shoot type. The rockshow with flair and fireworks at least makes it interesting to look at.

Swamp fever: Decent, not bad and the visuals are good enough. Finale leaves a lot to be desired.

Hard Rain: This map does have dynamic rain half way through and it’s one of the better campaigns, although the finale leaves a lot to be desired. Running through 1 inch water slowing you down to shit is retarded though, Also redneck zombies.

The Parish: *yawn*

Audio: The audio quality is about as good as the last one. The guns don’t suffer from the bb gun “pew pew” effect other games seem to suffer from, they actually have a nice amount of kick. Also the music overall is cool to listen to, and has awesome riffs, although the horde music is kind of retarded. The voice acting in this one feels a lot flatter than the original though, especially Rochelle and Nick, it’s sounds like they were bored in the recording booth when they were doing this.

List of broken promises:

Better AI director with 2.0: The only discernable difference that I can notice is that it constantly throws more zombies at you and a constant, almost annoying and frustrating stream of SI. The new game is hard, but it's in the worst way possible, just by giving you more bullshit. The spawning of items almost seems completely arbitrary now, while in L4D1 they usually made sense and actually did what it was supposed to, made the game harder if you were doing good, and and eased up if you were having trouble. In L4D2 however it's a relentless shitstorm of bullshit. I believe me infr4mer Radcon and Dman are all allowed to say this after being hit with 6 chargers in a row and Radcon killing 24 hunters in one campaign. C'mon that's just retarded. And if you do make it past all that, being beaten down and broken the game is not dynamic, it never lets up, you get rammed in the ass by 2 tanks at the finale 2 feet away from the chopper with 1 hp. I'm not complaining that the game is too hard, because it's really not, it's just harder for terrible reasons. Like playing DOOM with 1 hp being a constant, hard? Yes, fun? Nope.

Also not here are the dynamic levels that Valve mentioned numerous times. There was supposed to be Dynamic weather and day and night cycles, but they got lazy and claimed "it was too confusing to our playtesters" or some other bullshit excuse, so the game doesn't have them.

This could be alleviated if the game was just a bit longer, but no, it's just as short as the original, infact a bit shorter because it's easier to play through the first time if you've played the original. This is not a new game as Valve claims, just a content pack with a $50 premium. Now I’m just ranting but seriously the game is not worth it at all, and I didn’t even pay full price.

Bug list:

Holy shit the bug list just goes on forever, it's bad, even for a new game. Far below valves level of polish and feels like some crap EA pushed out to get it out in time for a holiday release. For reference, the bug thread on the TF2 forums goes to 60 pages, and has been open for over a year, and most of the bugs are very minor and have been fixed. The L4D2 bug thread goes on for 34 pages, half of them being game crashing bugs and game killing bugs that make it impossible to play the game, and the topics been open for 8 days now I think. That's just fucking lazy on Valves end. They haven’t even acknowledged any of these bugs except for the ones where people can’t even install the game. If you really do want to buy this game, regardless of this review or other wise, please, PLEASE at least wait until it’s not a buggy piece of shit. In other words wait 6-8 months.

Graphics: 6.5/10. (0/10 for Australian version)

When they are not brown corridors, I prefer the game visually to L4D1, and it seems slightly more optimized than the original. Slightly. One thing to not is that on Dead Rain there is no rain if your shaders aren’t set to high.

Also in case you didn’t know, the Australian version was censored, and very poorly. Extremely unprofessional and looks ugly, the zombies just faded away even before you shoot them, sometimes they change black before fading and it looks glitch and ugly, they do not catch on fire, and the riot cop zombies were removed completely.

Gameplay: 5/10

It’s the exact same fucking game with new guns.

Audio: 8/10

I actually quite like the music here, the riffs are pretty tight and the finales have good music backing them. The voice acting sucks though and sounds flatly delivered.

Grabbin peelz: 0/10

I miss Louis….

Overall Score: 5/10

Over all the game is just, meh. It’s mediocre, average. Not overtly terrible but does nothing new over the original and is nothing special. If valve announced L4D3 within the next few months, I won't be buying it, and probably won't buy anything with Valve on the box. A company name that used to stand for outstanding quality and polishe, now reduced to drivel and boring bugginess, and should be renamed to Valve/EA. Hell, even EA probably wouldn't have pulled this much crap, maybe...

Ellis: Easiley the best new character to the game

why does every one favor some toothless hillbilly?

and i think i'll get it out there that Nick looks and talks, exactly like Micheal(?) from Dawn of the Dead, remake

I found Nick to resemble a mutation of Edward Norton and Nicolas Cage.

I saw some videos of the Australian version and it is fucking atrocious...I don't care what game it is, to censor a game about FUCKING ZOMBIES for being violent. Are Australians incapable of handling anything remotely adult?

Why censor an OTT zombie killing game and not censor the PC version of GTA IV?

Anyways I do agree with like 90% of the review.

I'm glad i didn't buy this yet.

I'll just play MW2 online while Valve keeps "fixing" L4D2.

I played l4d2 and MW2 and i can honestly say... MW2 is ALOT better... Valve are slowly going down the drain and its the sad truth.

I have to wait until Christmas to get MW2, kind of blows.

I downloaded the game regardless and played through the campaign, which really hyped me for the online.

I'm serious about that 0/10 though, that's just lazy and shoddy on valves part. :/

Blame the Aussie government and their shitty game rating system. They only have ratings for up to 15+, and when it's a 15+ game, then it doesn't go on store shelves(like AO). Why the hell would they give the first game the go, and then force Valve to take away their awesome new gore system that allows a hella lotta awesome to be on one screen? Fucking squeamish Aussie bastards. BTW, the direct quote for the reason Valve had to make the game shit for Aussies:

"[excessive violence towards] living humans infected with a rabies-like virus."

I actually thought L4D2 was worth the full price; it gave enough new content (5 campaigns, new audio, new guns with subtle changes such as the SPAS-12 having a tighter cone, new characters, new SI, enhanced Director) to justify it. MW2 on the other hand is worth jack shit >> (5 hour long campaign with random 2-3 minute 'specs op' missions and boring multiplayer does not = $60)

Also about the 'lack of dynamic weather' in the other 4 campaigns; the feature is in there though Valve scaled it back for those campaigns (The lighting can change depending on how well you play). Dynamic level pathing is also still present in the game though it got scaled back due to Playtesting concerns (The Parish being a good example of it in action)

The only things I really hate the game are the horrid Survivor BOT AI and the guns taking up a ton of screen space

I think it's stupid how the Aussie ratings board handles things but it's deeply rooted into their Government and is almost not really the ratings board's fault. And regardless that's no excuse for Valves lazy craftsmanship.

They could have turned it into a mutant-fish alien coop game.

When valve talked about how the weather and level could change i thought the game was going to be sometimes night time or sometimes raining or something cool like that. But they all are pretty much the same I only noticed a couple level changes. Still was pretty fun thought.

You can blame Valve's playtesters for that.
