friendly/hostile NPCs

I was wondering if the old idea of friendly and hostile npc humans are still planned to be implemented in a release. If so, elaborate on what kind of roles they play in the environment, and whether they are only hostile, friendly, or either.

I think at least friendly NPC's will be released. But I do not think they are planned in the initial release. I think marine squads are planned, and S.W.A.T. and police members. I hope a member of the team can better answer your question.

Hmm, I wonder if they will keep the old models, or if they are going to completely scrap those and remake them, if at all.

Three groups of non-zombie NPCs.

Survivors: Mostly fodder.

National Guardsmen: They hold barricades and mow down anything non-human. They will kill you if you come too close. They'll warn you first.

Marines: Move in a squad. Armed to the teeth and lethal. They patrol a set of cordons determined by the mapper. They kill everything.

The NPCs won't be in our first few releases as we focus on perfecting the player-zombie relationship.

A few questions, will the "survivors" be friendly/hostile/ or will they require a since of trust before following(like the thing game if u played it). I'd assume that they should be randomly either. Also, i remember the cop/swat models you guys had a while ago, are those going to implemented as a "survivor" or would you possibly plan on adding them in as a seperate class? I am kind of downed by the aspect that some non-zombo NPCs if not all can't be seen as a friendly and help you out, but i suppose that would require quite a bit of coding to make them work effectively.

It would also make the game very easy. Technically they are as much your friend as the other players are. They are fighting off the zombies, but they can kill you if they choose.

It would be quite intensive to have them follow, navigate themselves, etc. With the National Guard (also interchangeable as SWAT) they will be stationary in a barricade. Marines will only move on a path set for them. This will make it more interesting but we want the game to perform well at the same time.

Survivors will mostly be somewhat friendly. More like indifferent to your presence.

Are the survivor's going to be regular plain clothed citizens or will we be able to meet up with renegade police/SWAT/National Guard as well that are friendly to you and will follow you around?

They will not follow, and as said they are not "friendly" they have their own agenda.

They will be regular civilians. Keep in mind how difficult it is to do all of this, we're trying to keep everything reasonable.

This marine idea is fantastic, but doesn't it offer a ready supply of assault weapons? Or are civilian firearms so rare that survivors will rarely, if ever, be well-equipped enough to mug the marines? (If they're always hostile, you can't very well take them on with melee.)

A squad is four people, and there would probably only be one or two squads in a map if they are used. Marines are sharp, armored and well equipped. You don't really stand much of a chance in a firefight but you can always try. They are meant to mostly be a deterrent and to control player movements.

As I said, don't expect the human NPCs for quite a while.

Likely they are going to be super tough, I'd imagine something similar in comparison would be the Special Forces in Dead Rising toughness, take half and dozen shots from a shotgun or rifle and still stand upright enough to fill ya full of lead. I trust that the Marines will be armed with different weapons, not just Assault rifle's right?

there would be cool if there was a rescue or evac team that helps you or at least gives you a decent weapon, and rarely spawn

I want there to be the creepy merchant from Resident Evil 4™

you know... the one with the purple and black trench coat and that always flails his arm to the side revealing weapons and stuff concealed in his coat, while saying: "welcome..." in a raspy smoker's voice. and he would always refer to you as "stranger..."

Will the Marines kill the National Guardsmen if they encounter them?

thank you!

I mean how hard would it be, its already in half-life 2? I suppose it would be hardest to mess with the ai so they don't run into a horde of zombies with a crowbar.

I remember reading the mods old info and it said they we would have ai team mates if we wished. but, that idea may of been canned sence then. its just comforting knowing that if i wanted to get in a game and actually wanted some ai team mates to help me blow away zeds, then i could. Im all for it! it would make the mod that much more badass. :)
