Borderlands

Anyone heard of Borderlands? It's this game sort of like Fallout 3 and RAGE coming out in October. The main draw is all the guns created using a manufacturer-based smart generation system. Basically, each manufacturer uses certain materials and such, and the game uses that information to make phat l00t, Diablo-style. The result is guns that you can just look at the model of and get a good idea of how it works. Certain colors have certain effects, longer berrels mean more accuracy, big magazines mean more ammo, that sort of thing. Some awesome variants the dev team have found are revolver-action sniper rifles, pistols that fire heat-seeking mini-missles, and laser shotguns.

The game also features 4 player online co-op with characters and loot being persistant across singleplayer and co-op. This means that you can level up in single player, find a gun a friend might like, join a game with him, swap it to him for a gun you want, and then you can both go back to single-player with your new gun, as well as any XP or levels you may have gained while in co-op.

This sounds too good to be true. I'm gonna ModDB it, and if you're lying, I will personally shove a shotgun up my-- you know what? Let's not hear what I'll do if you're lying. If you're not lying, than I'll have something new to amuse myself with for the next couple of days.

EDIT: Why... why didn't you tell me this isn't a mod? It's not even out yet! I'm not gonna preorder something that might just fall flat and sit in my steam games tab for the rest of eternity!

Er, because it's Borderlands? Seriously, where have you been the past few years?

I think this warrants a demo playthrough, but there are too many big games coming out around then.

I was down for this game way back before it had its visual overhaul. I'm not so sure about it now, but I'm up for a demo if they want to release one.

Whats wrong with cell-shading? Team Fortress 2 is like it, and it is a damn good game.

See, its people like you that prevent game developers from trying something new, they are afraid to do it. That is why we still have CoD ripoffs and more Halo games.

Nothing wrong with cell shading itself, but it has a time and a place. And that place isn't a gritty post-apoc game with seventy billion guns.

It's not really cel-shading. They call it "concept art come to life." The team decided that they liked their concept art a whole lot more than the actual game, so they took the textures from concept art and put them in the game. There is some slight cel-shadeing, but that's not the only thing going on. The game looks great in motion. Another reason for the switch was that some of those 87 bazillion guns weren't texturing right. The new art style solved that.

I was pumped when I read about it in a magazine a couple years back. Now that it looks cartoony; not so much.

I love the art in TF2, but this is nothing like that :\

I think the look that they're using is pretty cool. Probably gonna get it for PC, since I want to do coop and I don't know how many people are gonna get it for 360.

I hope they give the option to turn off the numbers that pop off of people when they take damage, I understand why those numbers are there but it makes the screen feel cluttered to me.

Don't know how I feel about the graphics, I liked the realism look when the game first released images but this look is... interesting.

No, Team Fortress 2 doesn't use cel-shading. It does all these things to make the team of the character stand out, so it's easily recognizable. They give a red team model a red outline, and a blu team model a blue outline. They just make the textures on the models to make them look cartoony by making their clothes solid red/blu. No cel-shading.

I said I didn't like the art style they decided to go with. That doesn't make it a bad game.

See, its people like you who prevent game developers from doing what they do best because they are too afraid of being told that their game is a run off the mill same old piece of garbage.

Pro-tip: Cell-shaded art style isn't new. Valve was not the first to do everything you know. Also I don't even think its actually cell-shading.

EDIT: No "FUCK YEAH!" for XIII? Shame...

These new ultra-thin, slightly elongated character designs remind me of Advent Rising, which was awful.

Holy shit - this guy is about to receive the most brutal hugging of his life from an army of the cutest aliens ever. While this might've been a tense moment with the old art style, it now resembles a new Pokemon game. Hugbug - use cuddle!

The old look was more generic, but I still prefer it over Jet Grind Apocalypse.

That actually doesn't look too bad... I watched a preview of it on XPlay and I think it was the 360 version. It was dark and horrible looking.

If I even try it, PC all the way.
