NMRiH Prefab Library

12 posts in this topic

I have a great idea... An idea that could reduce the time needed to create the maps. We could open a secured library in which members can post prefabs that they made into the library so that mappers who are part of the NMRiH team can use them. Quality Prefabs can be used, while those that are not so good can still have value as they can give ideas and suggestions in a more tangible form...

Prefabs could range from anything between floor patterns to small buildings to skyscrapers meant for the dynamic 3D background...

What do you think?

Doesn't the team have a rule against using stuff that isn't made by the team? Or am I thinking of professional teams.

Not sure. Back when I was on the team one member actually was in contact with a prefab team that created models for other mods, on the stipulation that they owned it and shared it with everyone who wanted it. But that was long ago.

This could work out to my opinion. I mean, Will Wright and his Sim games used this way to create content for most of his games. Why not bring this idea into mapping for NMRiH? I mean, a thousand brains are better than a few, so we could quickly generate ideas out of this.

Imagine entire maps created purely out of prefabs lol... :)

I really hope that was sarcasm haha

It was more of a joke really... Lol... Entire maps made out of prefabs... That would be interesting...

What's so interesting about it? Practically everything you mnake in hammer, is prefab. For example, you make a big non-enterable building with fancy entity work like spinning lights. Then you save it as a .vmf and drop it in the prefabs folder. Then, everytime you make a city map, you can choose from the prefab list you're building and place it where-ever you want. Hope you got the point dudes. :)

The idea is to have as many varieties of those as possible, no matter what or how huge the prefabs are. Prefabs could range from a single tile of floor to a large building. Anything the mappers could use.

I can imagine one day there will be a 'NMRiH Map building kit' for us to make random maps.

The interesting part is that:

1) It will involve all of us in the development of this mod.

2) It will make development of this mod faster.

3) There will be future resources for mappers to draw on. However this may sacrifice on creativity and possibly quality of maps.

Con of this would be that it's not clear who has made what or who is working on what, possible result is that multiple people will create a similar item and they'll wine about which one to use in the mod. Also the quality and styles of the produced assets may vary greatly.

And as mentioned before people might run off with their stuff and share it with other mods, which is bleh.

Those cons could easily be fixed. I'm sure I don't have to suggest them for you to know...

The map development time isnt the issue, it's usually the code and "bugs" holding the project back from being released. However if anyone feels like making some good generic props and posting the files i've no doubt we'd use them! many people contribute towards mods but don't actually get classed as a full staff member.
