Level Designer - Texture Artist - Prop Modeller

27 posts in this topic

Hello,

My name is Dylan "Steaky" Loney and I'm applying to work on your mod NMRIH. I sent in an application a while ago by email, but did not recieve a response, which was quite disappointing because I am very excited about what you guys are making, and would love to help out any way I can. Anyways, I decide to post right on the forums to see if I'd get a better result :)

I think I would be a great help to the team because I am also a very experienced mapper. I have been making maps for source (and other engines) for years now, and know almost every aspect of level design in hammer, from layout to optimization. Throughout this work, I've also worked with custom textures, and am great and creating new materials. [i began learning prop modelling only about one month ago using XSI, and am still a beginner at it, but I think I am getting better every time I make something.

Please feel free to let me know if you have any quesions, or need to see more examples of my work.

My FPSBanana Page with some mapping examples :

Some of my props (both static and dynamic) :

Some of my textures (all of these are for TF2, hence the 'cartoony' finish) :

Thanks!

You applied by email? To what address?

Your stuff ain't bad, do you have any more "realistic" props or textures to show I guess ones that are not meant for TF2, just so we can get a better idea of what you're capable of?

Hey Maxx,

I applied to the jobs@nomoreroominhell.com, which is posted in the "How to Apply" sticky thread.

Anyways, here are some more 'realistic' looking textures I've made for various projects. Most of these are made from stock photography by myself or others, though I am getting better at making them from scratch (such as the top left, which are for some 'lamp post signs' in a parking lot).

textures02.jpg

As for models, I havn't made anything yet that wasn't destined to be in a TF2 map, so nothing more realistic. As I said, I'm still relatively new, but maybe if you have a request of something you could use, I could give it a go.

As I said, my real passion is mapping, and I would love to do that primarily. I just figured since you were specifically applying for prop and texture artists, it would be a good way for me to get my foot in the door :)

Anyways, let me know what you think,

Thanks!

Hey Steaky, I'm Kosire from NMRiH (Co-lead level designer).

Your work looks good and we would like you to complete a test to get in. This test includes doing both some textures and level design.

fireescape.jpg

Edit: Ignore the text saying "Model for fire escape"

We would like you to create these 3 buildings in Hammer Editor (With focus on the middle one). Texture wise you will be doing the brick and trim textures on the middle building. For the rest your welcome to use any content from another Source Engine game.

When you're done with the test you PM me here on the forums with a picture of it and a VMF + textures so we can take a look at how you work.

You should only make a cheap interior of the middle building (Walls, floor, ceiling and a staircase with a door in to go up and down) and no interior for the buildings besides the middle one.

We also want to take a look at your optimizing skills, so please take your time to make use of hints, skips and areaportals for the middle building..

If you have any questions about this test feel free to ask me via. PM or directly here on the forums.

- Kosire

That sounds good, just one quick question, how accurate should I be? Do you want a brick by brick reconstruction, or do I get some artistic freedom to change around some things, change textures, stuff like that?

IMO Artistic Freedom is a huge part of the job, so feel free, but that general structure is what we're looking for. No brick to brick though.

The general idea is to give the building(s) a New York City feel. If you want some freedom to make a few changes, go ahead that's no problem but they should be generally about the same or at least the same style/feel.

Alright, thought I would go ahead and post my progress.

Just getting the basic shape of the exterior down. Im not quite happy with the bay windows, I feel like they need to protrude more, but that's an easy fix. I also threw in some placeholder windows, but would probably make my own for this building if I wanted it to look more like the original.

Then I switched tracks and started working on the textures. Nothing too fancy here.

brick01.jpg

trim02.jpg

So that's my progress so far. Total time for both the map and textures was probably around an hour, so that should give you an idea of how fast I work.

I guess I'm just wondering how much you want me to do with this. I understand you want to see what I'm capable of building, but I'm not a big fan of wasting time on stuff that won't ever become a finished product. I think my relativity shot shows I'm more than capable of working from source materials, while adding my own twist.

Anyways, I have all day free tomorrow, so if you want, Ill keep working on this if youre not convinced. Just let me know :D

Well it looks good and this is not a waste. This will be used.

You should work more on it, use your textures on it, func details, hints, skips, areaportals (for the interior as I said you should do, just simple 4 walls and a ceiling).

Sorry,

Waste wasn't really the right word. I just mean I've got a ton of ideas for levels I'd love to make for this mod, plus my own projects on the side. Its not easy to give up time working on those just to make a 'test' building. Especially since theres not much I can do in the way of optimization which is what you seem to be looking for. Probably an area portal over the door (and window maybe). Id probably turn almost all of this into details, maybe even take the upper levels and turn it into a skybox. Hints wouldn't really be necessary if I did that, as I imagine it would do a good job of cutting up a single room :) Skips... not much to say about them :)

Just go with applying your custom textures and see how far you can go... I like what you've got, now go the full nine yards, throw your custom textures on there and lets see how NYC you can make that building ;)

Plus, when you're done with it, the buildings can be used, whether in your map or someone elses. There's no such thing as a waste around here :P

Well...

I know I said I'd work on it all day Saturday, but I ended up working on my TF2 map instead. Which is good news, because I'm much closer to having something amazing to show you, but bad news because I didn't work on the building. Anyways, I doubt I'll work on it any time in the near future since I want to finish these maps up, so I guess that's the end of my application.

Anyways, sorry I didn't finish the test. Let me know if you're still interested, I would love to work on a full map for you guys, and like I said before, I've got tons of great ideas.

Thanks again!

Hey Max! I'm ready to start as soon as you give me the go ahead. I certainly don't mind putting other stuff on hold if it means making a map that will get released with your mod. Anyways, my steamID is dcloney, so you can add that and we can chat over steam if you want!

Well, its been quite awhile since I visited this thread.

In good news, I'm nearly finished the summer's worth of projects I've been working on. Just have to do some beta testing and then its on to release.

Sadly, I haven't heard from anyone about my application. I'd still love to work for this mod, I think its turning into an amazing game. Anyways, I just thought I would repeat that I'm interested, and hopefully I'll hear back. If not, I'll just have to pump out an amazing l4d campaign to make you jealous its not in your mod :D

Small shameless preview, its a very old screen shot, but it gets the idea across :)

I forgot to add, I'm still working on getting better at modelling. I'm still learning, but I can make some nice looking game props as well now. Here's a little guy I made for practice the other day.
