I did this in another forum its working beautifully.... All I do is Model stuff and show you my progress and finished product.

So first to be shown is a knife I've been working on for a while... I don't get on Blender much but I will get on it more soon.

I'm mostly leaving it up to the textures to do the work... it will be smoothed more and this is nearing the finished product... as soon as I can get a nice UV map and photoshop running again.

So criticism complements?

Don't rely on textures too much, especially for weapons. A nice diffuse, normal and specular map will definitely make it beautiful but you need to have the detailed, arched topology to really bring it to life. Don't be afraid to spend triangles on making ridges, creases or segments in your model. It will help bring it to life :)

I also recommend using a more solid and well rounded toolset such as Autodesk 3D Studio Max or Autodesk Maya.

If you're just doing it for personal practice, there is no harm in grabbing a trial copy of Max from the Autodesk website and... You know...

I see no harm in getting a "second hand" copy of max just to learn with...

Just don't try and sell shit, that's not cool...

The 3D Studio Max trial can do everything, it is the full version of the program, just that it expires after 30 days that's all.

I'd suggest Wings 3d, it's a free subdivision modeler that's easy to learn and use.

Yeah except that Subdivision modeling is terrible and no one should be doing that in their right mind if they plan on doing art for a game engine lol

.....but that's how I do it

this was allegedly made using subdivision modeling.

Yeah and that mesh sucks and is probably about ten to sixteen times heavier than it would ever need to be.

Sub-D meshes are the old way of making high polygon high detail organic meshes to bake normal maps from. Nowadays they are useless because you can use Zbrush or Mudbox for that and they look better.

If you're modeling just for fun do whatever you'd like. But if you're serious you should figure out how to do it "properly".
