Project Natal and "Milo"

34 posts in this topic

So IGN did both hands on with two games of Natal, a rigged up version of Burnout, and the game with the dancing girl from the conference, Ricochet.

IGN said that Ricochet was finicky but worked quite well and was fun, but they gave very high praise to Burnout which they said performed and handled exceptionally well.

IGN also had a recent hands on with the Lionhead "Milo" project and said that despite concerns, it was REALLY convincing and worked unbelievably well albeit being in early development. They said that Milo would comment on things like your clothes and the inflections in your voice.

I am very excited to see where these projects eventually lead and although I am both wary and skeptical, I am frankly genuinely excited about this tech for the first time in quite a long time. This could be revolutionary.

Well, as they said, Microsoft does software and this is a very software intensive sort of thing. Looking very forward to Natal.

Yep. I've always said Microsoft are the undisputed kings of software engineering, and this is proof. The tech will more than likely end up working great, all that is left to determine is if the games that come out for it are fun to play.

In general I wasn't really impressed with Natal. (I also heard that the Milo demo has been staged up to a point)

Sure the possibilities with it are endless but I and many other people need to have something 'solid' in our hands while playing; It doesn't feel right playing an FPS without some sort of an actual controller with a trigger or playing a racing game without a nice force feedback enabled racing wheel

I was more impressed with Sony's answer to motion control, their presentation and demos were more entertaining and nice to watch. In general though nothing can beat the classic gamepad/mouse + keyboard for your regular gaming

The problem i see with Natal is that it can probably only process things on a 2D scale unless there would be another camera at the side.

Another thing thats somehow ignored by these ppl is the view restricting monitor.

Oh yea,and the fact that u cant walk.

If all these problems would be eliminated, the revolution in gaming can begin.

Just imagine playing a FPS with your whole body, that would be a dream come true, owning all those fat ppl, kids, faggots, women.

That gaming system would radically change humankind as a whole by incorporating natural selection and true values into the rotten concept of hightech civilization.

As a result, there could be an almost fascist ideology spreading through the whole world, and not because of propaganda and war,but by the simple confrontation of the population with reality in a virtual form.

Now i would really like this technology, but for obvious reasons it aint gonna hit the market,or better this market.

Yea and that Milo thing had to be staged, unless they coded the first human like intelligent AI,and that cant be the case cause it would be classified.

:D

Could be...

Just like I thought the Wii could be, until i played it and realised it was a horrible gimmik, no matter what all the other sites said when they reviewed it.

IGN stated that the Milo demo wasn't staged when they used it, it was pretty much spot on.

Also as a developer I can tell you that what they did is definitely possible

I dont wanna start a fight here, but i dont think that IGN nor u Maxx have the expertise and/or clearence to say that this technology is genuine.

But is without a doubt possible, like everything.

It has gimmick written all over it, but with that said if it does work and I mean REALLY work then that will be pretty darn cool.

The only thing that will determine if it's a gimmick or not are the game developers.

You don't really know what I know, so I understand your doubts. I am saying the the technology is very much possible. The way it works is quite easy. It uses an IR sensor to measure the Z-depth of every action. It is a complex technology but the premise is simple.

It won't be ideal for many genres of games but I think for genres like RTS and such, it would be perfect.

Just to clear things up,im only questioning Milos AI,and Natals ability to perceive 3 dimensions by only having 1 viewpoint to its target.

Im not all into that kind of things,so if somebody wants to clear my doubts go ahead. :D

As far as the AI goes, it more than likely is not going to be an "all knowing" AI. What it knows probably won't reach much further than common knowledge and the rules of his world. It's a game at heart, not an artificial person; you won't have philosophical discussions with him. He's like a really complex script.

Thats wat i mean,its just a script,not a thinking intelligence.

Im so sick of ppl misusing the word artificial intelligence.

U cant call a script intelligent.

Or maybe u can,but if u do u would acknowledge that humans are nothing more than programmed machines following a script.

So the question arises, who the fuk programmed us?

Would be better for those companies to stop calling scripts intelligent,if we want to keep our history books.

Microsoft and Lionhead never once said he was "Artificial Intelligence" that is a label that stupid people have given him.

And he isn't "scripted" in the linear, common sense of the term either. He is "context sensitive" so depending on contextual input be it dialogue or action or facial expression, he can respond in an appropriate manner.

Does anyone have any insight on how it actually works? Milo I mean. Natal too if you know.

I do, and I've tried explaining it in simple terms... I'll write a more detailed but still simple explanation later on.

I'm also very excited to see how games develop with this new Natal technology. They pretty much had me after seeing the Milo tech demo when the character recognized the woman Claire and was surprised after she said "Thousands of people!".

Imagine games like Half-Life 2 allowing you to REALLY communicate with them. Would even make games like The Sims remotely interesting, if they spoke common languages instead of jibberish.

I`m interested in Milo myself... I can`t wait to cuss at him and tell him stuff that would make a real person angry.

Although he just might not do anything and say some stuff like "Command unknown".
