Microsoft's press conference

24 posts in this topic

Discuss things from their conference yesterday here.

Natal looked kinda gay at first but over time it started to impress me. I don't think they should have closed with it, but it was quite cool. Has some potentially awesome applications but we'll see if it lives up to it. IGN got it hands on and said it was sick.

Conviction was awesome, that game is going to be great and our very own Dark is working on it :)

I don't like Halo as games at all but the mythos is cool, and the Fall of Reach is probably the most interesting piece of that. It would be neat to see how the game comes out. I hope it is more serious and less cartoony which is very unlikely...

Forza 3 is gonna be awesome.

Over all it wasn't a that great conference but at least it wasn't as bad as Nintendo's.

Crackdown 2, L4D2, Natal.

I think it was a success. Good job Microsoft, I won't sell my 360 for at least another year!

I dont see this Natal thing going anywhere I mean come on Sonys had the Eyetoy for years and it wasnt the next generation in intereaction either.

True but the software tech behind Natal is a bit more complex. Don't forget that Microsoft is the king of software engineering for a reason. All they need is the proper third party support to make some killer apps that utilize Natal otherwise as you said Merf, it won't be going anywhere.

But are those not already the 60s target demographic? With the big manly space marines and the chainsaw guns and the Halos? Oh well from frat boys to soccer moms gaming sure is taking a weird left turn into an even bigger sea of shit. Also anyone see the chick when she was trying to showcase that rebound game for NATAL? She was jumping around like she had hot coal up her ass, arms going every which way.. Oh yeah precise control alright ahahaha.

As skeptical as I am of the Eyetoy: Xbawks edition I really do hope they prove me wrong and it actually is this advanced camera that can map ones movements in-game so the need of a controller no longer there. I just really REALLY doubt it.

Well look at it this way.

Within a matter of seconds of you walking infront of it, it can recognize that it is YOU and sign you automatically into Xbox Live.

That's pretty awesome. That amount of recognition blows anything I've seen before out of the water.

Plus, when you look at Sony's controllers, they're MUCH better at actual movement monitoring than the Wii's shaky ass POS.

I think done right it'd be a logical move forward. I love the 360 controller but we can't be so conservative here.

Lets not forget that 90% of gamers are 90% Jelly and Pie, so any form of actual movement would be next to impossible.

Personally the whole movement thing would be fucking irritating...who wants to make a complete and utter wanker of themselves when trying to play a game not on the Wii.

(I know I rag on the Wii alot but to be fair it is shit)

My biggest anticipation was Conviction. I played the hell out of Chaos Theory. Frankly it was probably the best game ever made. I'm afraid to say that they pretty much gave a big FU to the hardcore Cell fans with Conviction. The auto-aiming makes for a cinematic experience yet it turns the game into a linear play style. I realize the franchise has been worn down pretty well and I'm impressed at how well they've kept it up. Ubi Shanghai did Double Agent near perfectly. They brought a less shadowy element to the game, but made sure there was a familiar balance. That is the key to making a great sequel of any kind. In Conviction they made the game appeal to the masses by turning it into a Bourne adventure. Sam is super spy and everything is fast paced. Don't get me wrong, its badass. However, that's not Splinter Cell. It has always been about true stealth waiting for opportunities, utilizing your time and gadgets, and getting in and out without being seen (of player's choice).

Unless the debut multiplayer from Pandora Tomorrow (also in SCCT) will be brought onto the project. If they just gave me that old multiplayer with an engine upgrade I will be throwing money at Ubisoft.

Natal just made me laugh my ass off at the 360 Avatar demo.

Oh, and Modern Warfare 2 looks cool.

DA's multiplayer was completely different and it failed. That's why it pisses me off that the single player is now going to be completely changed as well. Like I said the only way I'll buy Conviction is if Ubisoft has the common sense to bring back the SCCT versus.

I'm not sure who to blame though. Annecy just had to put in their precious AI and came up with those stupid challenges. I just don't understand why they would remove Spy vs. Merc and make it into a hide and seek knock off.

Double Agent was the worst Splinter Cell game, and one of the most tragically pathetic games of this generation... I really wanted to like it, I really did..

Conviction looks amazing though.

Even just from an artistic point of view, having mission objectives and flashbacks play out in the world as you travel is just an awesome idea.

I think it is a brilliant, stylistic and very aesthetically appealing design move.

I agree with you, and I wish I had thought of it first.

Now I have to go back to the drawing boards.
