What's happening with NPCs? I know that at first, beefore the mod went temporarily dead, there were supposed to be SWAT, Police, civie, and obviously zombie NPCs in the first build and Army/National Gaurd in the later ones, but does that still hold true?

Obviously zombie NPCs, but we will also be including a two tier "Human NPC" system in our later versions. The first of the two-tier system is the semi-friendly Police and National Guard. They remain stationary at roadblocks and they will shoot the zombies and warn you to stay back. If you continue to approach they will kill you.

The second stage of the tier system is the Marines (or equivalent if the map takes place outside of the United States). The Marines will actively patrol and control a set path and area killing anything and everything that moves. They will be ruthless, tough, and it will be up to the player to gauge which is more of a threat; the shambling undead hordes or the armed-to-the-teeth relentless Marines.

As I said, this will be much later on once we've got a good handle on our netcode.

Aye, what Maxx said.

We've also tossed around the idea of survivor NPC's that you can help out or not. They'd add extra firepower, but also take up valuable ammo.

Objective maps may have NPC's to save as well. There's a lot of room to grow too :P

you should also add the gang of rednecks from the romero's movies. that would be pretty sweet. probably wouldnt be able to do it on the scale that they were presented in the movies though.

Sounds good. Also, make the marines have impossibly good aim and excelent AI, because if not, I can easily see someone who has figured out an easy way to bring down a squad of marines killing them all and getting their M249s and M16A4s, etc. And that would be a true exploit.

What about Godzilla

Godzilla only destroys japan occasionally fighting other monsters, which usually destroys japan in the process, Marines however are a danger to those in and around them, including themselves (which is why they don't salute, in fear of judo chopping their own heads).

Yeah expanding on Luc, make it so if the team wants good weapons there all going to have to fully cooperate to destroy the full marine squad. They have to get pretty creative also, like using the zombies as meat shields! But if they succeed then they get amazing military weapons for everyone. So its a weigh the risks sort of thing.

Yeah, but this should definatly fail 90% of the time.

So the marines won't stray off their patrol path if they caught one of us and chase us?

Is there still the possibility of having Marines as allies too?

Ya know in case a mapper wants an escape type map and uses Marines to cover the exit or say your a civilain trapped in a military base and have friendly troops that follow you around?

But why Marines, why not some sort of Special Op's team?

No, that is too much, too complex, and would generate too many bugs. If they chase the player then they have to chase zombies too. They are merely controlling a designated area and will be used to create tension and difficulty as desired by the mapper.

No. They are cleaning up. I don't want to spoil anything but we may include certain levels in Beta 3 and beyond that will involve "friendlies".

But why Marines, why not some sort of Special Op's team?

Because there are 242,000 members of the United States Marine Corps. Special Ops units would be too busy taking care of high priority and special interest missions like rescuing members of the government, securing military installations, etc. They wouldn't waste their time patrolling a city.

if the military die, as in they get butraped do they become zombies? that would be cool to watch if they get swarmed then turn into a zombie and shamble after you :D

low risk of em getting killed though

Yes, if they are killed via infection they will become zombies.

I reckon that a Spec Ops team is far more expensive to replace than a squad of marines

It will be interesting to see how this works...the only game that I remember that had random NPC's becoming zombies in actual gameplay (not a cutscene or a scripted event) was Stubbs the Zombie...and if I remember rightly the only thing that happened was the corpse was replaced with the same model/skin but zombified and in a 'getting up' animation.

Which is actually the most efficient and easiest way to do it.

But what if its the early stages of outbreak?

What about Alpha Teams?

(Teams, plural, not Alpha Team)

Awesome, that means that I can take pride in knowing that if there is a zombie wearing Marine fatigues chewing on my ass, I wasn't the only one who screwed up.

This mod isn't World War Z

The Alpha teams were effectively a combination of the CDC and some Men in Black...they weren't the first line of defence but were trying to prevent an outbreak from behind the scenes by killing infected, enforcing quarantines, deportation and shit.
