What do you guys want to see

100 posts in this topic

So it's been a while since I've mapped, but I really want to start again. What kind of map do you guys want to see for NMRiH?

I want to know what kind of themes/settings would be popular.

I'm making mall map so there's no use to spam mall maps for NMRiH. :) I think somekind of farmhouse/countryside maps should be very good choise.

I'll tell you waht would be the most neat and the most popular! A mansion map! Kind of like Resident Evil but better... because remakes of a map from a game tend to not go well unless if there are actual keys needing to unlock doors and stuff.

Remember, kind of like Resident Evil. A REsident Evil feeling in design and looks.

Also, with an outside portion of it where you see the night or dusk sky through a window and you can also go outside and let the side metal fence guide you to another portion of the mansion! People would LOVE a mansion map like this, especially if you made it well enough.

Trust me, just about any map, if made well enough, would be popular, and I'm just suggesting to you that you should apply those basics to a mansion map because if it's a dream map for me, then it might be dream map to others or it might become a dream map after they play it! You just have to make it well enough!

That's a good idea. I like it. It would be hard to pull of though, mainly because of the realistic boundaries for it. How would you contain players?

It would make a good barricade map, if one barricade is destroyed, move back to the next door.

Just make a mansion with doors everywhere. Almost every room should have at least two doors in it. (Some could have one, that way you get cornered) Main lobby with two flights of stairs, one of the stairs could be blocked by furniture pieces and what not.

Make a ballroom with a chandelier, and if ya shoot it, a weapon/bullets might fall down from it. (I'm not really familiar with Resident Evil hiding places)

Just no dogs or birds........ please........

Why would someone realistically hide a weapon on a chandelier?

Also, just having a bunch of rooms with connecting doors would make for a boring map and horrible gameplay.

Well, the players can be located throughout the mansion. I would suggest that some or all of them start off outside the mansion and they be chased inside the mansion by some runners (taken form Resident Evil on GameCube). I'm not sure if that's what you were asking about.

This map could be one of those maps that make you very happy to at least get some weapon while most of the time, you're trying to run away from zombies in the mansion. Hmm... I would then suggest that a mansion map should be coded in with using keys to unlock doors but if that's too much, you can just make it a barricade map like the ultimate horror like you even would have to barricade yourself in one of the rooms just to hide away from the zombies. They'd be banging on the doors while you have it boarded up and you'd be hoping for help soon or later so they don't break in and eat you. I would also like to see zombies breaking through the windows and climbing in the mansion right in front of you to spook you out.

Hehe, it really would be a good idea, as you say, there can be a dark hallway with the moonlight shining in and as you walk down it, zombies bust through the window... too bad you can't really make lightning effect and rain in HL2: Source, I don't think. Just imagination is a guide to it's succession.

Also, the common, yet legendary, or epic, the graveyard in front of the spooky mansion under the moon which is overseen above by a town would make a great map of looks. People would go through a graveyard before they get to the mansion (yes, just like in Conker's Bad Fur Day!) fight, dodge, whatever against zombies. Then, behold the mansion! I can think up a lot of ideas of how it should look but the rest is up to: The Scientist!

I would also disagree with the fact that just a bunch of rooms with doors connecting would ONLY DEPEND on how you make the map and where the zombies are placed and yady yady yad...

I could definitely see a use for sources new rendering options for foliage and cool backdrops of mounts in a night setting for a mansion on a hill overlooking a town. I'm gonna do some research and see what kind of mansion layouts are on the internet to get a good idea if it would be big enough/have enough variation for it to be interesting. Also, Half-life 2 models aren't exactly geared towards a nice fancy mansion, and I can't model.

How about this, someone mentioned something like this above...

Start out in a small town, and get chased up to a mansion to make your last stand.

I took this photo out of Medics Photography thread. This would make an awesome setting for a town. Start in something like this then run up the hill to the mansion overlooking the snowy town.

Edit:

Just thought of something.... has everyone here seen the movie Hostage with Bruce Willis? You know the mansion on the mountain/cliff? That would be amazing! Start at the town and have to go up the steep mountain road to get the the mansion.

That would be interesting, but the security system that house had would be kind of hard on the zombies.

Anyway, how about the grungy, seventies tenement house from the Romero Dawn of the Dead? Broken down apartment buildings sound ideal for barricading and stuff.

how bout a realistic map with like a bar, hotel , gun store, and a police station and you spawn like on the streets and look for some were to baracade and hold off the oncoming waves. But dont make the pd or the gun store 2 overpowerd make it like haveing 3 pistols and like 2 shotguns while pd has only radios and pistol ammo probly a magnum or somthing, and the bar would let you make a molitov cocktails.

Yeah! I've seen Hostage around like 5-10 times. Nice movie. Sounds like a pretty good idea. I can imagine that there'd be runners chasing you up the road until you get to the mansion

Yeah, I really like that photo. Creepy, ambient, abandoned, and the snow it perfect. As I said, small town America is great for a zombie map.

indeed. Id say come up with just something creative and new and you'll have an awesome map. Just make sure its good for the style of gameplay nmrih has to offer.

I like the idea of a town, but towns are always hard to pull off. Most towns have basic blocks, which aren't interesting, and how do you realistically make boarders and boundaries, you can't just put up a fence around the whole thing.

I found some really inspiring pictures of a rundown industrial park, and that would also be pretty fun, but industrial maps are a little overdone, I'd have to find something to make it different and stand out.
