Music?

Is NMRiH planning on any kind of in-game music or is this going for the realistic approach and not have any kind of in-game music at all?

I'd understand maybe it could play a part with the Mapper, (like a radio playing a rock song)

The plan is to have some ingame music playing, more atmospheric than tuneful though. We also want to include some musical stings to enhance some events. All this kind of music can be turned off in the games controls for the more realistic experience.

In terms of in-game audio, there will definitely be radios, tv's, elevator music, crossroads mall advertisements hehe...These can't be controlled by the player because they *might* affect gameplay.

I like the idea of having radio's and stuff around. Maybe have news about the zombie attacks urging people to stay in their homes and blah blah blah.

I want to hear music as good as or better than the Resident Evil series music. Like walking into the RPD, you hear the suspenseful music to walking around outside, just some spooky, eerie music plays. That's what I want!

@scientist -- already recorded 25 minutes of 'newscast'...which is exactly that. Hope you'll like it!

@joe -- Really hope we can do something like that! I can't really say specifically though, it's down to our composer.

Keep the ideas and requests flowing on this topic. There's no bible at the moment, it's a free for all!! :o!!

I'm happy to read "keep the requests flowing"

- is a link to the shibang of what I like listening to in Resident Evil 2. I would suggest that when you come across zombies, music like played @ 7:26 of the youtube video I posted in this post plays and when they're all killed or you get away from them, it stops... and if you continue listening and watching the video, @ around 8:06, one of my favorite musicals are playing along with the sounds of spooky wind blowing and the sounds of zombies... beautiful... seriously... beautiful! Around 10:08 is the RPD theme, I also like that music as well. Then, of course, they have the first Resident Evil, the movie, theme composed by MArilyn Mansion that I also love and something as deep as that would be fitting as well.

I guess having some wild music played like @ 7:26 on all zombie-encounter occasions wouldn't be as great as sometimes that happens just so you can fit in other times when you hear music played at 8:06 along with zombies around.

If y'all have played Conker's Bad Fur Day, guess which is my favorite part of the game? The zombie part! It has a mansiom and everything! Anyways, they have suspenseful music too as you roam the mansion and when you see a zombie, it makes another beautiful zombie sound but when it starts biting you... one of the creepiest music that gave me the creepiest, crazy experiences ever. I guess y'all can also make some really creepy music for when a zombie bites you, it makes another tone of music.

nice nice, I checked all that out, thanks. The wind and zombie moans work well, give you that surrounding zombie presence.

Your welcome. I hope that gave you ideas about some things like how you can probably make music that sounds better! :)

No because that's called plagiarism and is illegal.

It depends on the licensing scheme used. yeah id like a more intense feeling when getting attacked by zombies that are coming in larger numbers. but kind of average when theyre not trying to kill you.. Just to make the moment a little more horrific.

The worst kind of noise is pure silence, especially in a foggy or dark environment, no noises at all until you least expect it

That's probably the sound of NMRiH right there: Slight, ambient music being played, then the music stops so swiftly and quietly that it's unnoticeable, and once the zombies come in, the creepy, excruciating music comes in...

Well it's been ages since I was last privy to what the team was up to, but it was my understanding that Rich 'Beckett' Douglas was the original composer behind the music used in NMRiH. Again that was a while back, and even then the team had lost touch with him at one stage when new map progress slowed down. After all, he provided music for new maps, no new maps, no need for him to assist.

Anyone who is interested can listen to a few of the BGMs he created here (under Soundtrack):

...or that's what I would say except it appears those file links are broken at this time. If I still had access to the FTP I would upload them again, or fix the links. I do happen to have most, if not all, of the original BGMs stored on my PC. Of course I can only share what the team allows/permits me to share (in which case the old music we had stored on the website should fall into that category, unless I'm told otherwise).

I hope it's like the Zombie Panic Source music where it's so subtle you barely notice it's there, but it adds so much to the atmosphere and tension.

Tough call. I haven't played ZP:S, so it's hard to compare. I just listened to a few of the BGMs though, and I'm not sure how much tension they build, as we're not talking RE-scale soundtracks.

On the flip side NMRiH_1960sHorror is awesome. I loved that one because it totally matched to target, namely it's the replacement BGM for any map that's switched to "Classic" mode (black & white). Great stuff that one.

Nope. It was your imagination. The only game I played yesterday was Portal... again. For kicks.
