its like any other piece of software, it takes time to learn, i admit hammer is harder than say something like unreal4 where you can literally load it up and start building, with the older tools like hammer it does require some basic knowledge to get started and requires alot more skill to make a fully playable map , and years of experience to get a quality of map say like the ofifical maps, with that said, i would suggest looking around the internet and youtube for tutorials there is no reason why with a few hours a day for about a week or 2 you couldnt get confident in the basics and be able to create something, there are plenty of tutorials on how to make a room, or your first box or whatever on youtube that are easy to follow, also in terms of compiling its all setup ( or should be ) when you load hammer from nmrih and assuming you dont get a compile error you should have no problems from that.

they need to make it a little simpler

I like how it takes some getting used to, it prevents shite maps from being released every day from people who just copy and paste models :D

Unfortunately we didn't make Hammer, Valve did. We can't re-invent it, so there isn't much we can do about it :(
