3D character artist

15 posts in this topic

Hi, my name is Alicia Peterson

I am applying for a position as a 3D character artist.

Most of my experience is in making characters I can, however, also make objects and structures if needed.

I use mudbox, and maya, but am willing to work with other 3D programs.

Your show reel is almost a year old. Are the pictures more current? Have you had any experience with zbrush? I think you should try it out, your base anatomical structure is good, you just lack a bit of detail which is easy to include in zbrush and bake out to normal maps.

Thank you! Yes that reel is a little old I am working on a current version I would like to post up on here, but I wanted something to show as of right now. I know I could have squeezed alot more detail into that piece but I ended up focusing more on the particle effects at that point in time. As far as Zbrush, I haven't used it much but from what I have heard its not to hard to get the hang of so, I'll go ahead and get it downloaded now so I can try it out more. I will also see about getting more up to date pictures on here for you guys to take a look at. ^_^

Ok so I gathered some images to show off the poly count of several of my characters as well as weight painting, texture/ normal maps, and UV layouts.

The following are screen captures to show off the poly count of each of the characters shown:

Ok so I took a few screen shots of me weight painting one of my characters I know you can't really tell how well its painted by the pictures but I figured I would include them anyways.

I know I use the Djinn as an example a lot, I just really like that character and put a lot of time into making it. ^_^

Your character meshes are too uniform, which results in a lack of proper surface details over the key points of a character. The silhouettes that you have too are very consistent and uniform, not deviating much from a basic human form. You should try breaking those silhouettes up with some more designing shapes, hard surfaces and unique clothing choices.

Another point is that most of these meshes seem to weigh in at over 30k tris. Our characters need to be 8k tris for players, and 5-7k for zombies.

I'm also noticing that none of your characters really seem to have real textures put together for them looks more like just zbrush surface painting type materials. Do you have experience doing material bakes, spec maps, etc? I see some of the normal maps look quite good. As a rule of quality and style we need all our materials to be sharp, detailed and with decent saturation.

Do you have any experience at all working with Source at all by chance?

I don't have a lot of experience working with source, I have been working with it a lot in the last week I have all the valve plugins installed into maya and what have you. I should have something to show in source by the end of today or tomorrow.

Yes I completely agree I should add more unique clothing choices, I only really added clothing on two of those models. I don't really count the Djinn his clothing was Ncloth, and he didn't have much on. Material bakes I don't have a lot of experience with either, I end up focusing on the modeling more than the texturing, but I am more than willing to put more effort into it.

I know the model isnt the most beautiful thing ever but Its just a test. I got the model and textures to work properly, it was much easier to do it through blender rather than maya. :)
