Marines and lore

13 posts in this topic

Are Marines still planned for a future release? If so, will they come before or after cops (assuming that cops come after NG). I'm guessing that the team is lacking the resources and/or has other priorities right now. I hope that this is still on the "eventually we'll get to it when it's possible" list.

A while ago SickJoe came up with a visual concept for the US Marines that would be sent in to wipe out anyone that wasn't with the US military. I liked that he tried to create a Marine that would look like an intimidating insect thanks to its gas mask. I'm curious, have any other concepts come up in a team discussion from that time til now? I thought it would be cool if another variant of the Marine came in dark military goggles and a skull balaclava.

How big will the squads be, will they have a rank structure like the NG, and what kind of dialogue will they have? Will they be portrayed in a sadistic manner or will they carry out their mission using formalities and military jargon? I feel that the latter would do a better job of having them come off as a highly trained fighting force that I should avoid.

Sample dialogue:

Sadistic manner (survivor spotted): OH I SEE EM, LIGHT EM UP!

vs.

Formal manner (survivor spotted): Contact, 12 o' clock. Open fire!

Also a lore question. In this universe with 732-ZH, how long do you think it takes for a zombie to go from a runner to becoming a walker?

Yes.

but for serious, not sure if I should be giving away any info on that, that's not my call. But I can answer your question about the runner-to-shambler time frame, which I believe is about 3-4 days.

I do not recall it was said that we were going to add US Marines, just the National Guard soldiers, but I can't confirm that, the big man Maxx or Riley can.

You can actually access some of the NG sounds currently available in the build (if you know how to open .vpk's), take a listen to those and it'll give you an idea or so.

I don't remember how long it took for a zombie to go from runner to shambler, it might be shorter than what Demo stated, but again I don't really remember the exact amount of time.

We still have the Military planned for a future release, most likely after we get the other stuff done (bug fixes, bandit npcs, etc.)

Players will mostly meet disorganized elements of the New York National Guard who may or may not fire at you, which depends on whatever Scenario/Map you play through. One level may have them be friendly and still in contact with USNORTHCON, while another level may have them be completely cut off from the chain of command and will shoot you on sight out of fear. I know we'll probably start out with 4 or 5 members per squad (1 NCO with the rest being normal rank and file soldiers). As for the tone of dialogue we have some recorded audio for the Soldiers which portrays them as calm and collected for the most part

As for the Virus question, it takes around a few days for the Runners to regress into the Shamblers you see in game

And at the time I remember there were whispers of adding a secondary Military organization into the game, but that was around three years ago

Does that vary with the athletic condition of the person infected? Would an athlete remain a runner for longer?

If the person was freshly turned they'll be able to run after their prey, regardless of their athletic ability at the time; of course if a marathon runner was turned they'll be able to run more consistently compared to someone who was out of shape (they'll still run pretty fast but there'll be some irreversible muscular damage and they'll just walk/limp around)

Eventually things like Rigor Mortis take effect and negatively impact their agility, though there are instances where seemingly harmless shamblers spontaneously break into a running sprint when lit on fire; perhaps fire triggers a long dormant fight or flight process within their dormant mind? We'll never know. ;)

Yes, but Rigor Mortis has been found to actually wear off with time. Would that have any impact on a zombie's mobility? Would it be possible, in essence, for a shambler to become a runner once more?

Also note, I recently found this response from Maxx on the steam forums in regards to the realism of runner zombies in NMRiH.

Ahem

"Also, let me explain our runners. A friend of mine who is a doctor helped me design the virus in a way that makes sense. Our zombies start as runners until their adrenal glands burn out as their parasympathetic nervous system never kicks back in to play - eventually they sieze up, slow down, and become shambling zombies after a few days. We found this to be a rewarding and exciting concept."

So, to revise my question to better fit this new information, would the adrenal glands burn out before Rigor-Mortis sets in, during, or after? Because if it's after the effect wears off, that would provide a window in which a runner becomes a shambler, then a runner again, and then finally a shambler. In terms of gameplay, this could function similar to the sleepers, except instead of a presumed dead zombie rising again, a presumed shambler would start running again.

The rank structure for the "squads" works as such - a group of soldiers are ranked "private" and have one of the four who is ranked as a "1sgt" - we can have more than one of these squads, at which point one of the Sergeants is "promoted" to a Lieutenant who controls all of the squads - the idea was that eliminating any of the commanders on that chain would cause dissarray for all down the chain reflected in-game by the soldiers suffering stat penalties and a lack of organization making them easier to kill.

the idea though was that Marines would be exempt from that, they would also be exempt from "panicking" which is what the Privates would do if all the commanders were gone. A Marine would remain constantly lethal and effective even by themself.

Will we ever get to add Marines? Well, first we have to add NPC bandits - which will act as the basis for the human AI we will use to implement the National Guard - which would then be the basis we use to add the Marines.

Also I just realized the OP's name, Architect 3-5 is from the script for the National Guard radio play I wrote ;)

Thank you very much everyone for your answers, currently the amount of hype coursing through my veins is equivalent to the amount that I got when I saw the Battlefield 3 Caspian Border trailer in August 2011.

Yep Maxx you got it! Thanks for taking the time to create it. Like you, I too dream of a day where we have a movie or mini-series that's basically Black Hawk Down with zombies. Follow a squad of like maybe eight soldiers as they fight their way out of a zombie infested city (during the "Great Panic" of the zombie conflict) after their UH-60 chopper suffers from mechanical failure and goes down. You get to see law enforcement, civilians, and bandits amidst the chaos.

The radio intercept is like the closest thing we're going to get to that until the movie/mini-series exists I feel. I always assumed that Architect 3-5 was an Apache helicopter, but if I'm wrong correct me lol.

I'd love to see you do another one in the future that is from the Marines' perspective as they conduct a successful sector sweep, clearing their area of survivors and zombies. Would be a nice tease prior to their release.

Lastly I wanted to share something I found to be amusing. I was playing with a friend (we're both Asian-American) on nmo_chinatown. He asked why there weren't any Asian zombies and when Asian National Guardsmen would be in the game. I told him the team would do it when Half-Life 3 gets released.

If HL3 gets released really soon please don't eat me!

You are 100% correct that Architect 3-5 was an AH-64!

and we have a lot of plans similar to the things you just described - but can't go in to any details yet ;)

As for Asian characters - we've been trying to get this done for a long time but when it comes to character art we have awlaysh ad trouble getting content produced, and when we do it is often not exactly what we were looking for. Getting in Asian zombies, NGs, or player characters would be a very nice addition I agree.

I wonder what the consciences of our artists here are like. I can imagine things being okay getting extra models done, but how it happens could be as difficult as me making choices that involve commitment and overcoming struggles. I understand being an artist can get really rough. It's feeling like your skin is inside out while in the game people involving art like yours. It can just fade out like my ability to cover most Nirvana songs, it's like I don't even care anymore. Truly being Kurt Cobain is still underway, but the transition is nuts; like going from metal to bone; extremely slow. I really would love to appreciate and just look at myself as if I'm still in 7th grade without a guitar, and just think, "fuck these niggas. I don't even have to pop 'em like its hot!" It takes work, and I don't believe get'n wept is necessary. That's gonna be my damn choice. You want choices quicker, go ahead and compensate me the time you secret niggas had me waste with all your money combined. Then, we can see what happens. You know a real nigga doesn't want to look greedy. Get me my shit one good time and leave it alone.

Use this last paragraph as a metaphor in the possibility of getting more NMRiH stuF into the game:

I do math. I know how to help anyone here from Dr. Phil to your general physician healthcare provider. I see hatred and hyenas just waiting for bigger changes using that alibi "Joe's old: 25 years old, it's time to chuck him into the fire." On my end, I see terrorism and a fucking lawsuit. Before the courts, you just gotta think. It is indeed possible to compensate me your money. Say no while you can put a cell phone bill on hold for a month. Everyone involved, including contributors could pay $30. That's $30x possibly 50 of you! That's where this shit gets HOT, cuz you don't want to feel like abitch although you think it's okay to locomotive wreck me like a bitch, and say, "that's life and it happens to everybody." Yeah fucking right! Let's do this war till all my family dies. I said it, I don't want it, and I don't mean it, but it's happening in your tyranny... IN AMERICA. My parents may support you, but that isn't phasing me. See with money and compromise, you can make anything happen for yourself. You should think about, but you can't have it if you got karma from hating Joe. Acquit that karma now and form a fund for me!
