Specular Reflective Refractive Rain Demo and Download

5 posts in this topic

So I just took a look at the vmt.

Seeing compilewater in it made me snigger. But really though, nice work making the rain refractive. I can't vouch for performance though, no idea how hundreds of refractive raindrops will affect fps. If nothing bad happens it might be cool to put this in the game by default. :D

By the way, its VMT not VMF, VMFs are pre-compiled map files. VMTs are the text data for textures (which is what you have in that zip).

lol Yea. Allot of those settings don't do anything. I should've waited before posting, I went back to it later on and removed allot of those parameters. I'm not gonna lie I didn't know if compilewater was doing anything or not. lol

I haven't tested anything performance wise nor do I know how to, other than by fps. It isn't too bad but there is a drop in fps, but then again I have 2 precipitation entities at 100% density. There is a handful of r_rain convars that all need to be entity parameters. Something that could help with performance would be the r_rainradius, though it would need to be done server side unless I can figure out how to add convars as adjustable properties in hammer. I haven't found out how to or even if you can. So far all my attempts at finding out have turned up dry.

That would be pretty cool to see it as the default rain in all the maps that have rain in them. Plus it's using preexisting textures so it's a simple addition of a vmt file even though it needs some cleaning up.

Speaking of rainy maps. Do you have a server running with Midwest on it? I tried to connect to the one you had up before but it's down.

Shoot. I think I'm just going to download it. I want to see what it looks like with the new rain. - - I hate playing solo.

Also with the precipitation entity I added the alpha input to it in the fgd so your able to control the density and opacity.

I tried adding various parameters but none of them have an effect. Not even the alpha (It only works as an input).

lol vmf. Thanks for the correction I fixed it in the op.

Sorry, still a wee bit more before Midwest's full on public. So no open servers yet... :|
