Totally copying Dr Hammer's idea (was it his idea?) and doing my own blog-type topic detailing my map-making adventures.

The map is my childhood neighborhood except sorta in the midst of being totaled by zombies.

Interior of my friend's house (modified for the sake of privacy/not displaying the interior of their home to the world)

(this house is INCOMPLETE, don't jump me)

Map's likely going to be 8 waves, runners at round 3, children at 5, and supply drops round 4 and 7 (or something).

Unlike a lot of maps where players just find the comfiest zone to hole up and abandon all other zones, the emphasis on this map is defending the neighborhood as a whole, with three zones spread out over the 6 houses, including the front, side, backyards, street, etc. Basically, no boarding up one house and waiting for your problems to go away. It's your home, your neighborhood, fight to take that shit back yo. To put more pressure on I'm likely not going to include FEMA bags of any sort, so try your hardest not to lose too much zone health.

Guns are typical civilian firearms (Ruger .22 rifle, Sako 85, 1911, etc) and melee weapons are plentiful, consisting of what you'd expect to find in any garage or shed (crowbars, wrenches, baseball bats, shovels, etc). However, the power weapons (sledge, fubar, fireaxe) are locked away in a certain shed that needs to be welded open before you can get the good stuff.

I should also mention this is my first map.

Neighbor's laundry room and a code....perhaps for a secret door? Is there a door? What will be inside of it? We'll see....

S3mOvLh.png

Spoiler alert: the welder for the shed spawns here. For now.

I should also point out most the textures are placeholder, so don't attack me for any out-of-place house sidings, brick walls, concrete, carpet, yadda yadda

It looks pretty detailed. I like how many different props you've crammed into those rooms lol, just make sure players don't get stuck on random decor when backpedaling i suppose.

Thanks, and nah, I've run through several times, it's kinda hard to get stuck on things.

Here's the interior of the shed full of goodies in my friend's back yard

And the backstory to this map being explained I 'spose.

It's in the first day or two of the outbreak, and the local High School (the one I attended) was turned into an evac station but things went awry. Now all the zombies from the evac center are heading through the woods to the neighborhood and the players have to hold out.

Unlike 99% of nmrih's maps, I wanted to set this during a bright, sunshiney, no rain, no fog, pleasant late afternoon.

Hey, let's get a little contest going. First one to suggest a name for the map will get an easter egg dedicated to them on the map if I end up using their suggestion. Map name must be one word long (like "nms_village" for example).

It'd be preferred if this map could be given an actual name, not just "neighborhood" or "suburbs", so, help me out with this! lol

This is coming along quite well :)

That skybox looks great! But i think there may be some texture misalignment in the bathroom window. Oh, and that kitchen ceiling is textured with roof tiles lol.

As for the name, perhaps nms_pleasant? the skybox and the house interiors are pleasant :3 (what a dumb pun)

Yeah, all the textures were just thrown on, I didn't actually line any up and I ignored a lot. I only put them up while I was working to better help envision what the place would look like because I just can't work with orange dev textures, lol. And thanks, much appreciated.

Looks good so far! Wouldn't have known that it was your first map if you didn't mention it. I like your plentiful use of props. It makes the shed and other locations feel used and more realistic rather than an empty representative room. Basing locations on real locations or reference places really does seem to turn out well.

For a name, a couple of suggestions:

nms_neighbourly

As neighbours, we come together to help each other out. Whether it's lending a cup of sugar, a weedwacker, or a hand in the event of apocalypse, it's always the neighbourly thing to do.

nms_reminiscence

Think back to those early days, back in high school. Feel the nostalgia course through you as you remember the first day of school, that stolen first kiss, or the day that the zombies came.

nms_hometown

The simplest option (although it sort of breaks the 1 word title rule) but that's what this is to you. I'm sure a couple of people can relate to early days in their parents' house in suburbia.

Doing it during the day is great. You're relying upon the map to stand up on it's own rather than using darkness to enhance it or make it feel scary or to hide unappealing exteriors. (However, I'm not criticising night maps, I love those, too!). The screenshot under "Backporch is ideal for sniping in this house" doesn't seem to be loading. Is it just me? I'd love to see it. Please keep working on this map, I'll expectantly keep an eye on it!

Thanks! Compliments are always welcome, as well as name suggestions lol. Here's a little status update.

I really like the title "neighborly" and I'd definitely use that exact description in the loading screen artwork if I use that one.

So far the titles that I like are:

- Grove (Dictionary Definition: "a road lined with houses and often trees, esp in a suburban area")

- Credit to Gothic for this one

- Neighborly

- Credit to the Juggernaut for this one

- Hinterland

- Credit to Dr Hammer for this one

I like nmo_grove.

It sounds cool, and is more descriptive and accurate than my suggestion.

I love the little story-telling details like the blood trail in the toilet. Did you change the texture on the fridge over? Or is the distance from it just making it look a bit nicer than before?

I didn't change any fridge textures or anything like that, just in hammer mode the textures are displayed in low quality but in game (like the screenshot up there) they appear more detailed.

Nms_grove is the most elegant overall; i always assumed that grove = forested clearing, yay new vocab :D

The interior and exteriors have a wild discrepancy regarding details; the interiors are awesome, but the exterior is sorta meh...but i'm sure that will change soon. Tip,leave a bit of trim on top of the garage doors, it'll look better trust me.

Prettying up the exteriors is gonna be the last thing I do. My main focus for now is getting each individual house made and functional, with detailed interiors and weapon spawns. Then I'm going to work on outdoor aesthetics like wires, flag poles, gardens, shrubbery, rain pipes, gutters, window shutters and frames, etc.

This

will look like this when I'm done

You're using the nodraw texture on your unseen sides, right?

No! Build with nodraw! If you go back and try to find all the unseen sides, much less texture them, it's going to take forever. I would suggest you select all your brushes, apply the nodraw texture to all of them at once, and then retexture with placeholders. Trust me, you need to map with optimization in mind. Quickly, do it, before it's too late!

Well I'm making each house individually so they're going to be prefabs. I can nodraw one house at a time, trust me lol

I agree with this guy, its a pain the bloody ass "defacing". I can't believe this stage skipped my mind...
