Shit is crack yo, if you can spend the time and money on sourcebooks and the like.

I personally play D&D 4E, friend of mine spent quite a bit of cash on it and I play with him and my friends once or twice a week. After a while though I think it's a bit too simplified to play through, in contrast to 3.5 which I thought was more 'sandboxy' but more intimidating for new users to get into.

Recently I've been dabbling with the Old World of Darkness material (more specifically, Vampire the Masquerade) and I managed to get some people into it; we're doing an initial playthrough of the Ashes to Ashes chronicle in Chicago and it's my first time GMing. In contrast to D&D I find it deeply more engaging due to the amount of role playing/story (it can get really overwhelming at first), but there's not much emphasis in dice rolls. Our first session lasted for 11 hours and we had a blast lol

----

I'm wondering if there are other DnD/oWoD players in the community, I know Sick_Joe used to play WoD and Dman used to go around in DnD 3.5

I suppose you could say I'm die-curious (heyyoooo), but it's hard enough getting everyone's schedules coordinated to play something as simple as poker. To even suggest an activity that involves reading a book...yeah, that's...not gonna happen in this lifetime.

No, I like games that run on central processing units.

Then tell CCP Games to finish up their World of Darkness MMO; otherwise I'm sticking with the paper top :P

I had a group which recently dissolved. We cycled pathfinder, WOD, Iron Kingdoms, and Shadowrun.

I still haven't got to play a shadowrun game as a player. I could convince my friends to play it, but can't convince any of them to run it.

but it's hard enough getting everyone's schedules coordinated

This is why my group fell apart.

My cpu is powered by burning paper or coal. Please donate your game as fuel to the nearest power plant.

Just fucking around lol.

the internet, it makes dreams a reality...a cat covered reality

Tried playing All Flesh Must Be Eaten once over irc with three separate dice bots / plugins / whatever. They worked fine for everyone else but, every time I rolled, I only got 1's (on a d20). Any time you roll a 1, you count that as a critical failure, roll again and add a massive penalty to whatever the new result is. Unless you get another 1, at which point you add an even bigger penalty and roll again, etc.

One hundred and thirty seven 1's later, I got a 2. So, basically, I swung a baseball bat at a zombie and the universe imploded. Kinda lost interest after that.

yeah noobbot rolls his own actual dice when we use maptools to play DnD because all of his combat rolls are shit and the only time he gets 20s is if it involves laying ye olde pipe with the ladies of the night it seems. maptools RNG hates noobbot basically. i gets dem 20s a decent amount of times.

we talked about running pathfinder. the group wants to play shadowrun at times, but i'm the only person that knows all the shit involved and i don't really have the time to host.

I found a group locally here in Portland I play most Sundays with. We mostly use the Savage Worlds system which I have found to be a much more enjoyable system than 3.5 or 4E. We're currently in the middle of a long running fantasy campaign where we built the world but leave it up to the DM to flesh out details time to time. Playing something like this every weekend is great. I've always wanted to play table top games but never had a group willing or active enough to try and get together for something like this before moving here.

Oh, so Trevelyan gets to rape underage girls (I'm assuming that's what happened) but I wasn't allowed to speak with an effeminate Southern accent? Yeah, that's fair. Pedophilia is acceptable in NMRiH DnD games but dwarven dandies are not. I bid you good day, petunias. Don't let the door hit ya where the chimera shoulda bit ya.

now you're just makin shit up. our parties usually end up killing characters we don't like along the way....it's the natural order of things. one of radcon's friends had 2 of his characters in a row get murdered by the team....and when he made his 3rd character that we actually liked we stopped playing shortly there after.

i'm tryin to setup a system for DnD where we all play as gladiators but we fight monsters in waves like killing floor and there are chances for good and bad events to occur each wave as well as a miniboss round and you build crowd hype as well as get endorsements for better gear in between fights. bascially a setup where you don't really need a DM and everyone can play whenever so you don't run into the "oh so and so isn't here, we can't play" problem.

tldr dwarven dandies are ok, but who knows if the group will devour him in a non gay way.

i'm taking a child's view and saying that since i wasn't there for this it didn't happen and it doesn't exist in the archives of life. i support dandy dwarves, bicurious bladelings, gay githzerai, kinky kenkus, so on

and

so forth

Hey nah, they were plenty old enough, I could tell. They were all at least as tall as the sword the character was wielding which, according to his honor code, is what matters.

In the past, we did too many dice rolls. We've learned to economize on dice these days. With age, wisdom. With wisdom, no one wants to play any more... god damn cocksuckers... grumble grumble...

I'd be interested but I typically work during peak fun times. But if you guys ever play Deadlands I'll make the time.

Well on my end, I finished my first Chronicle for VtM: the players blundered through Chicago, accidentally causing dozens of riots and killed a few dozen organized gang members, they did eventually save the Prince of Chicago. Though, instead of scouting the compound he was in, the insane Brujah player immediately opened fire with his stolen Assault Rifle

They killed everyone with no mercy, so it was fitting that the Brujah player got overwhelmed by a few dozen ghoul rats when he kicked the tunnel door down with no plan made in advance

Over on my DnD4E game my group managed to meet up with the other group of players (8 players in the room) and we managed to slay the evil Demon plaguing the lands of Winterhaven; we shot it down with a few dozen ballistae doused in holy water. If we didn't do that we would've all died lol

----

In general it's a blast, but I know my DnD4E group might break up since my friends prefer to play actual video games. My VtM group on the other hand is definitely staying together to do another chronicle, but we don't have many players (just 4, including myself)

yeah but with a really strong RP based game like VtM it's better to keep it smaller so everyone can shine and develop. cool shit though!

So. I don't get it, is it litterally just reading things from a notebook or do you all do you do it with the little warhammer toys?

with VtM you can just talk and say what it is you are doing and ask questions about the environment and what not. DnD is more combat oriented and placement is pretty crucial (like if you are behind the enemy and your allies are across from you in front of it you'd certain bonuses and shit, or if they are behind something it can grant them cover or concealment and each of those has a major and minor form <partial concealment or superior cover shit like that>) so knowing exactly where people are and where they are facing, how many tiles away they are for ranged attacks etc etc.

shadorun is inbetween the 2 because it also has very strong orientation related combat but it's more of a "this dude is 30 meters from you which puts your gun at X range giving you Y modifiers", that's more suited to a quick layout on paper or a dry eraser board or some shit.

when we play DnD online we use maptools instead of models obviously. shit's fun though if you can get a good group.
