Few noobish questions..

22 posts in this topic

Sorry I'm new to this. I've only had a server rental for an hour now. So, I have a few questions.

1 - A friend says some servers have it so everyone can hear you speak even when you are far away or dead. How can I enable this? I took a poll of people using my server and they'd like it.

2 - I ran update, but how can I tell what version of game I am running? I want to know what maps I should be downloading.

3 - Is there some way to make it so that when the first person joins the game it doesn't automatically start counting down to start? Soon as I click Join Game it counts down, when other people weren't ready to join. Oops. What to do?

The servers are hard-capped to eight slots for performance issues. The majority of servers around right now will start experiencing lag between 100 - 200 zombies spawned (some lag sooner, and others can handle a much larger amount).

1. Turn sv_alltalk to 1.

2. If you update it should be the latest, you can always check forums or the community hub most likely to see what was updated. As far as maps, the custom ones you have to install manually. Very easy to do.

3. I don't have the answer to that. But to be clear, you want it to not count down till a certain amount of people join?

Thanks for the answers. I think maybe after setting sv_alltalk to 1 I didn't restart the server. I will do that in a minute.

As for the count down thing.. nevermind I think.

I believe he wants to wait until x amount of people join the server before it initiates the count-down.

Yes, which can be dumb is someone wants to play solo. Just my opinion tho. :/

So could someone tell me about custom maps? I put them on the server, but it said I didn't have them.. I thought it auto downloads them for me? Or do I need to instruct all my users to copy them into their maps folder manually? Once I did that the map worked.

I see this in my server config:

//fast dl mirror setting

//sv_downloadurl "http://DOMAIN.com/tf2/"

What does that mean?

You wanna put your fast DL ulr there. You can use mine, but I don't have every single map, I can add maps tho. You just have to let me know which ones. Mine: http://repentgaming.uphero.com/nmrih/

Here's what I understand.. maybe I am wrong:

Maybe I am confused about what FastDL is. When someone clicks join game will it automatically download the map for them into the correct folder? Because, I looked at your link and it takes me to files ending in .bsp.bz2. I guess bz is some sort of zip.
I questioned my server host about it. You know, I'd rather not want to leech off you.. that's your bandwidth and what not. My server host has a fast download already setup and said I can use it. They gave me a "fastdl redirect" which is included with my hosting and gave me my username, password, host, and port, but I've no idea what to do with all that. I sent them a message, just waiting for an answer. I have a similar URL like yours with my name on the end, just no files in there yet.
I am guessing the login info they gave me is FTP where I upload the files and when I insert that redirect url in the server config then it'll all work, correct? Do I need to find some kind of software to zip into bz2 and upload or just upload the bsp file?
And, thanks for all the help so far.

Yes, you can upload them to the redirect url. I just use 000webhost, but since you already have a hoster with this option then it is pretty easy. I made them into bz2, because it makes the maps faster to download by compressing them. Obviously for people who hate waiting on maps that are big, it cuts the wait time by at least half.

zBzipper: http://css.gamebanana.com/tools/1495

You can also see my guide which can help with custom skins if you ever want to do that as well, but under Finalizing the Product step 2 is the zBzip instructions. Pretty simple.

I have no clue how to use that bzip.. it downloaded, I said I didn't want a desktop icon.. it didn't put it under my start menu.. boo. So, I reinstalled, took a desktop icon. I ran it.. it creates a folder with complete.text in it and complete.bz2. What crap. I installed it already. Most unfriendly software ever.

This is really pissing me off. I uploaded the bsp, nav, and nmo to my redirect. I can see them there. I try to connect to server and it says I need bsp.

You put the files you want to bzip in the bzip folder, then double click the desktop icon, it will do it's thing. Give it a few since these are maps and are a bit bigger then what I was using it for. Once it is done, you will see the original file in there, along with .bzp file. You do with this .bsp, .nav, and .nmo (.nmo is for objective maps), then you upload those files to your fastdl server/website using filezilla or any ftp software you prefer. Make sure the director or root of the maps folder looks like mine: http://repentgaming.uphero.com/nmrih/maps/ (Again yours may look different, but after the .com/ it should be about the same. You upload them to the map folder.

Then in the server.cfg, you just put: http://repentgaming.uphero.com/nmrih/

Yeah, I think I'm giving up. This is all complicated. bzip only outputs a file complete.txt at 1k and a bzip file that's 1k.

But anyway, even so I should be able to use FastDL with the 3 original files.. bsp, nmo, etc. It keeps saying I am missing the bsp. I do not want my members to have to copy the files over manually.

Just so frustrated nothing is working. Rcon is useless so far.

If you want, I can bzip them for you. You just tell me which maps you want done, and I will bzip them then upload them to mediafire or something.

Well bzipped or not, the FastDL should still work, right? Just sticking the 3 files on the FastDL and on my server. It's not working. We're only running Objective maps, so Hospitality V2, Zephyr, and Dead Labs.

First of all, when you did the bzipping, you ensured that it was correctly made yes? If so, good, you can check by opening the file and trying to extract the original.

Second. You created a structure similar to that of which nmrih is. it should be nmrih/maps/ and place all the bzipped files in to the maps folder there. So, for my full one it would be http://frienemygaming.net/downloads/nmrih/maps/

Thirdly. On the server you ensured that you uploaded the NORMAL files, and not the bzipped ones. Bzip only goes on the Fast DL server.

And lastly, when you add in the server.cfg you ensured it was like this.

sv_allowdownload 0

sv_allowupload 1

sv_downloadurl "Urlhere"

Maling sure there are NO // in the way.

If you have done all that and it's still not working, then you have another issue somewhere else, and I recommend you speak to oyur hosting provider at once.

Yeah it works now.. I didn't realize I needed a Maps folder and a Scripts folder on my FastDL. We played Dead Labs for the first time last night. Hospitality V2 is one of my favorite maps so far.
