What kind of map do you want to see in nmrih?

24 posts in this topic

Hey everyone, been on a very demotivated run the past few days and I'm gonna break it!! While I still intend to make some finishing touches on my released map, I'm using this time to start something new and fresh.

I'm making this topic because I want to get an idea on what people want to see as a new map. And I want to make it, whether you have ideas, screen shots, replica suggestions, etc. I will take it all in to consideration.

EXAMPLE-

nms_Campsite

Here's my current thoughts, but I will likely not go with this idea. I've been messing around with displacement sculpting (yea the new(er) sdk tool released with l4d) thinking of making a nms campsite style map. The idea would be you start in a basic campsite at night, and obviously zombies would be coming from the woods/trees around the site. There would be various paths leading through the dark woods to other areas almost like a maze (maybe to like a cabin, or a treehouse)

I want to hear what the non mappers and mappers alike have for suggestions. But please be logical, for example no I will not/can not remake chernarus on day z lol..

Making something that actually involves the player is important, in all maps that are around here, you just run around, kill some stupid as fuck brick-wall-like zombies that can't even walk to you in a straight line and carry around some gascans + push buttons. The survival maps are even more boring, cause the zombies are boring.

This game is not missing maps, but good zombie ai, thats the real problem, the zombies are the ones who create tension and fear, but they dont, cause they get stuck everywhere and are stupid as fuck.

You can make a good map if you actually lead and involve the players, you need to raise emotions and make them go nuts, make them sweat! it is your job, cause the zombies and the game cant do that job for ya right now! simply making another map that doesnt add any value to this mod is stupid, so think about something original!

btw, sry if you consider this as offtopic, this is my honest opinion on this topic!

greets, vatterger#

Zombie behavior's pretty much determined by two things; nav meshes and more importantly, animation events

Code wise the AI's actually working pretty fine, they're just heavily crippled since most of our nav meshes aren't fine tuned to their needs (nav_jump's pretty important since it tells our zombies if they need to drop down an area or climb up a waist high obstacle and even then it's really sensitive) and they have a limited set of animations to use (this is a big issue).

For example, L4D's zombie AI has several different variations of climbing animations for every possible object and height they need to climb over and they can crouch down/crawl too; in our case we only have one half finished jump animation. In terms of movement, L4D's zombies have many variations of running/walking animations that can move in all 8 cardinal directions (N, NE, E, etc.). In our situation, our zombies only have around 10 or so walking animations and they only can move in one direction (Forward, or North in this case).

Fortunately, Xendrid (after getting fed up with the lack of a 3rd person animator) and the programmers are working on the animation event situation and I'm cleaning up our current nav meshes. Ideally they should be in before we make 1.07 public.

Any of the following could be cool, even if some of them have been done already, there could always be another:

- Hotel

- Police Station

- Apartment Complex

- Gas Station

- Factory

- Airport

- Stadium

- Diner

- Wasteland

- Factory

- Power Plant

- Hangar

- High Rise

- Prison

- Forest/Cabin

- Hospital

- Mall

- Bunker

- Radio Tower

- Mines

- Laboratory

- Railyard

- Casino

- Saw Mill

- Suburbia

- Farm and/or cornfields

As for weather, time of day, ambiance, etc, any of the maps could have/be:

- Clear, blue skies

- Overcast

- On fire and shit

- Snow(ing)

- Raining

- High Winds and/or prestorm

- Night

- Thunderstorm

- Dawn

- Dusty

- Foggy

- Flooded

Any one of those with any combination on weather/atmosphere would be cool, maybe a map could be haunted for extra spooks. Those are just all ideas though, for anyone looking at this thread who wants inspiration or an idea.

I wish there would be more horror focused maps, something that would actually scare the player. It's difficult to do that without jump scares or overused concepts (i.e. slapping slenderman into the scene). Not to mention if you were to implement triggered scares it would only effect a couple people at best.

Custom horror music is almost mandatory,
A mapper would have to rely on dark areas forcing flashlight usage which is a big turn off to a tonne of players,
You could get some cheap scares by adding triggered images to flash,
It's also difficult to create a good horror map because the player knows "it's only zombies" and they're really not that scary,
A mapper would have to implement a "fear of the unknown" such as having a set of monster sfx with hopes of the average player being unsure whether an actual monster is going to show up or not,
It's pretty unfortunate that it would be frowned upon to have instant death scenarios as dead players hardly ever want to spectate and end up leaving thinking about how shitty the map is,
I want to attempt a true horror map but sooo much effort and custom material would have to be created and that's a lot of work for one person especially if there's nothing to gain from the project.

TL;DR: someone make a horror map that scares me.

yeah, i already heard of the lacking anims. also thought of l4d as an example for responsive ai, the zombies can go nearly anywhere.

Its great to hear that you work on the issue :)

I like reading some of the old projects people start and never finish on here. I was thinkin of remaking some of those ideas from scratch but don't want to "steal" any ideas. So I'd rather ask what theme or suggestions people want to play.

I actually designed a campground/deep forest/Washington State kind of map (from a design standpoint, not in Hammer) but never carried it out.

I actually designed a campground/deep forest/Washington State kind of map (from a design standpoint, not in Hammer) but never carried it out.

this is exactly what I want to make, love grasns map but its more of a designated camp ground (based out of the Jason movies) with a lake and cabins.

But I'm talking like straight up woods, in darkness, the dim campfire and some scattered glowsticks, etc. trees almost all around you, Like a small campsite in a town forest/woods.

Dark woods + heavy rain + thunderstorm is a pretty good coctail. Making lightning one of the few light source is an interesting solution, if it could be accomplished.

In addition, there could be a cave 'episode' with illumination from mushrooms/crystals (like in Dear Esther).

Extraction point could be somewhere in the mountains for example.

Talking 'bout weapons... Only old carbines/shotguns/bow, and maybe pistols. No m4/mp5 etc.

Safe poins (with ammo/guns etc) could be camp/beacon/backpacker's bags in caves with some stuff nearby

Come to think about it - those are pretty standard as far as zombie games go.

I think the zombies are scary. When I play I get scared.

Hi all, this is my first post on these forums :) I've started playing nmrih when it became available for free on Steam and so far i'm absolutely loving it. I've been thinking about other custom map posibilities as well and came to this topic to give my 2 cents.

First, i'll quote Payne:

Any of the following could be cool, even if some of them have been done already, there could always be another:

- Power Plant

I'm a big S.T.A.L.K.E.R. fan and in conjunction with this i'm also a derelict nuclear power-plant enthusiast, so when i've started to think about what map i'd like to see in NMRIH, a nuclear powerplant came to mind soon enough.

I guess that the setting could be best used for an objective-based map; i've been thinking about it for a bit and came up with a couple of rudimentary ideas for the plot and objectives.

PLOT

A group of survivors is holed up in the vicinity of a nuclear power plant somewhere in central North America. Although they managed to contact the Army and requested extraction, things are not as easy for them as they might seem.

In the weeks and months after the zombie outbreak, it has been observed by satellite monitoring that the automatic shutdown and cooling function of this particular NPP has apparently not been working properly and thus the powerplant has been leaking increasingly harmful radiation to the water, air and soil of the state it's situated in. Having a zombie apocalypse on humanities' hands is bad enough, but having a potential nuclear wasteland forming in Americas' Heartland could be even worse; since the homeland defenders are stretched thin and the group of survivors in the plant's vicinity needs to earn their extraction, the army has decided to use them for helping to shut down and secure the NPP for good this time.

PLACES

- a house near the power plant

- NPP entrance area

- NPP caffetteria & administrative area

- NPP inner chambers, including a maintenance tunnel network, turbine room, reactor and nuclear fuel storage (a pool for spent fuel rods)

OBJECTIVES

- enter the NPP

- find protective gear (hazmat suits)

- open the inner chambers blast doors by finding the switch in the administrative area / enter the inner chambers through the maintenance tunnels

- shut down the nuclear reaction by manually inserting all the control rods in to the reactor core

- provide sufficient core cooling (you'd have to open a couple of valves in the main reactor room)

- stop water leaking from spent fuel rod pool (with a welder)

- exit NPP, possibly over the roof with a helicopter extraction

This is just from the top of my head, i might add some ideas later if i think of anything else.

I had a few ideas about other maps I'd like to make for NMRIH, but considering I probably will never get the time to actually make them here is two objective map ideas.

SS Shipwrecked

The survivors of a spreading infection aboard a vast ship must make their way to a communications tower to radio for chopper evacuation, but the ship has been heavily damaged from a collision and is now beginning to sink, the survivors must keep moving to reach the communications tower before it's to late. The ships automatic anti-flooding systems already making life even harder.

Icy Isolation

Inspired by a personal favourite The Thing, survivors of a research facility has been cut off with no safe option in sight, their only hope is to collect the necessary parts and fix the damaged Snow Mobile outside in the blinding snow storm with only the faint glow of the guide poles to direct them to each section of the facility. Stick as a team to fetch the parts or risk splitting up and face getting lost in the snow, or being another victim for a undead researcher.

I've got an idea for an objective map. nmo_skyscraper

The title says it, there could be a high building, you start at the bottom of it or even a parking garage under it and you have to reach the roof to escape with a helicopter.

I would like to see a NMRiH map based off of the Malebolge from Dante's Inferno. Not only is the setting visually interesting, but considering that's it's in hell, it would be wall-to-wall zombies. I hear they're pretty packed down there this time of year.

This is actually a pretty old topic, I got my hands full at the moment. I'm actually in the midst of reduxing/redoing nmo_hospitality. It was largely unfinished visually and objective wise. Currently adding a new route with a set of anti-objectives, and everything visually got a face lift. Other than that I have an nmo school map I'm working on after I finish hospitality. Will have something to show soon but rerelease is still a little ways away

Maps I'd like to see? An abandoned amusement park. You would be able to walk on the roller coaster, go through a Funhouse, and the house of mirrors would reflect people and zombies, etc.

I would like to see a map with a 1980's arcade in it with like 40 or 50 games and pinballs in it.

An nms lighthouse, maybe? Would be a little different from usual.

Things I would like to see:

- Overrun Quarantine Zone:

Some sort of survival or objective based map set in a quarantine zone. Would be great with the National Guard, when they are added. Possibly trying to re-secure the area or GTFO. Could work for either gamemode.

- Army Base:

They're already fortresses. Now its time to see how well they hold up. Perhaps could start the players with guns and ammunition in excessive quantities, but have no supply drops, forcing rationing. Just a thought.

- Submarine:

Tight quarters already, but add a zombified crew? Would make an interesting objective map, but I don't think it would work with current zombie models.

- Some sort of Ship

- Construction Yard:

Difficult survival when all you have to walk on is a two-by-four or a thin slab of concrete...

Those are my thoughts. Granted, some of those I'm already trying to make, but I thought I should add something.
