Steam workshop?

20 posts in this topic

Is it going to have steam workshop for custom content like maps / weapons / characters ,etc.

It's something we would like to do in the near future once everything else is taken care of

Lol. I felt like just throwing that in.

But yea, as Riley said. It's something I'm sure they want to look into. Getting a grip on the new 2013 source branch and steam deployment is the focus now. Having the workshop would allow for a much faster and more collaborative experience for map makers and fans alike.

I hope it will be more like Skyrim' steam workshop than Team Fortress 2 where you have to wait for the things to be selected by the dev and then included in the game. In Skyrim' workshop you can select what you like download them and just go play with your new mods installed and then the top 3 or something like that could be made official or w/e

Having full integration, such as seen in garry's mod isn't easy to pull off. A whole sub-system would have to built to allow/deny certain mods people have enabled. Map downloading would be easier, but still the time would need to be put in to integrate a piece like that.

What about weapons skins and sounds? Im not sure but I think it shouldn't be harder than maps (if it was made like TF2's weapons skins installation http://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Skins )

steam/steamapps/common/Team Fortress 2/tf/custom

The custom folder acts like the regular /tf folder

Example:

To install skins you simply do /tf/custom/RandomFolderName/Materials (where the texture go) /tf/custom/RandomFolderName/Models (obviously the model)

And then the games simply loads the model and material from that folder (The model is named after a weapon that is already in the game, that way it knows which weapon to replace)

Same goes for sound or even animations, that way you never replace the original files and you can have custom sounds / weapons skins or models / animations or w/e you want

Oh just for mods just got an idea, ever played Call Of Duty 4? There was a "mod" option in the menu and it would launch the selected mod, the game then knows you are in a mod named something and then when you would join a server if it isnt in the mod you are in it would re-launch the game into the regular game if it was a game without mod or would download the new mod and launch you game with that mod activated.

Of course I know all that is lots of work, doesn't have to be made like for tommorow, just saying it would be fun to see those features come later

I think Maxx would flip out once he sees a AK-47 mod :P

There's a CZ 585 or something already in game. Basically an AK47, but semi only (and heard it's more accurate). But yea, wouldn't be surprised if someone added one if they could lol.

It is. Most people can't tell the difference (some how?). The only major differences are the body, having a drilled not stamped receiver (I'm not the most knowledgeable on the inter-workings of firearms), and a longer barrel. It works for Canadian requirements thanks to being unable to mod it for fully automatic fire.

I definitely would not be interested in getting content into Garrys mod. Awhile back I tried to download something off garrysmod.org , it was something that was already ripped from some other game but it said I had to own a copy of garrys mod and that I shouldn't use a pirate copy, so go to steam and pay $9.99 and then I can download it. I'm still very pissed off by this hypocrisy. lol

CZ 858 and AK are very different, on basics operation, bolt, gas piston, only ammo is the same.

Yeah, we know that. It's "AK enough" for those who really want that AK47 looking gun, yet because we don't like (majority of us) seeing AK47 everywhere, it's not the actual Kalashnikov.

It's weird that games are almost required to have an AK47 or AK74. Seems that somehow and for whatever reasons, people pound the idea in their heads that it's a requirement. There are a lot of different firearms that simply don't get talked about. Maybe assault and military class weapons have a sort of "rarity" that you get to use one instead of say a common civilian glock handgun.
